  • Awlrighty then, I have a few different songs that tend to pick me up during a run, one of which is Fall Out Boy's 'This ain't an Arms Race', I tend to go at least a minute faster for the duration of that song!

Here is the sports imix I posted in the iTunes store for my upcoming 1/2 marathon. It should be about 2:20 in length, I plan to finish at least in 2:10, although if I am feeling perky, breaking 2:00 would be uber cool. I there's a few extra songs in there as insurance. Let me know what you think!

  • Don't know why, I'm a little suburban white yoga girl that likes to run, but I love to listen to rap when I'm working out...

Kanye West - Stronger, Get Em High
Tribe Called Quest - Find A Way, Electric Relaxation
    Common - Testify, Go
The Roots - Dont Feel Right
    Missy Elliot - Hot Boys
    Eve - Who's That Girl
Blackalicious - Give It To You

U.N.K.L.E. is great electronic stuff to run to...

Sometimes I throw in a little pop tarty-ness to add a bounce to my step:

Joss Stone - Put Your Hands on Me
    Estelle - American Boy
    Mark Ronson - Versions
    White Stripes - Icky Thump
    Lilly Allen - LDN

And if I'm really training and trying to focus, anything by Radiohead (Thom Yorke) or Muse.

Tadaaa... sorry that was way more than five... as you can see I take my workout music very seriously.

Awesome that you shared this! "The Distance" by Cake is SUCH a great song - it was on our cross-country cd probably every year. Black Eyed Peas is awesome for pump up music.. I have to confess, the Madonna seems a little random, but whatever helps you run faster :)! I didn't know you could make an imix - I might have to look into this! Very cool!!

I've just spent about an hour marinating in my own post-run sweat (eeeeewwww!) listening to samples on iTunes, and based on what I've heard and Joe's awesome idea, I posted my SF Half mix to iTunes as well. I'll put the link on my profile once it's up on the iTunes site.

Actually, my lovely wife made this mix for me, so some of the songs are certainly random. You'll have to post your iMix to the discussion once you get it published. (Easy way to do that is to highlight the playlist in iTunes, then goto File-> create iMix. You'll then be prompted to login etc, but that's about the extent of it.) Keep in mind that if you have custom songs that iTunes can't identify, those songs won't make it into the final iMix.

Now off to download some of the songs here that everyone posted..... :)

    Gotta love Stevie!!

They played that song in the grocery store the other day... I felt like taking off running with the shopping cart! It's always odd to hear songs from my running mix when I'm not actually running.

My "power song" is Welcome to the Black Parade by My Chemical Romance- awesome motivating song to pick up the pace. This sounds really weird- but Irish folk/dance music really gets me going, too! Like, Michael Flatly Irish dance music. Don't knock it till you try it!

  • Not my top 5 necessarily, but regular rotations on my shuffle...

"Take a Bow" or "Knights of Cydonia" -- Muse
    "Gideon" -- My Morning Jacket
"My Name is Jonas" -- Weezer
    "Nicotine & Gravy" -- Beck
"E Street Shuffle" -- The Boss

  • I'll admit that this list is somewhat all over the place... but there is goodness in every genre!

These are in no particular order:

Fall to pieces -- Velvet Revolver
Bring the Beat Back -- Public Enemy
Crystal, Regret, Ceremony, Run Wild, etc... -- New Order
    Rebubula -- moe.
Pace is the Trick, Rest My Chemistry, C'Mere, Length of Love -- Interpol
Get Innocuous, Someone Great -- LCD Soundsystem
    Fight Song -- Scott Stapp
    Demolition Man -- The Police
Wake Up -- Rage Against the Machine
Take the Power Back -- Rage Against the Machine
    I Kissed a Girl -- Katy Perry (OK so I'm a man)
Power to Move Ya -- Ziggy Marley & Melody Makers

Looks like Chemical Brothers need another look based on the lists people are submitting...

Ever since I started training with a group, I never listen to music when I run anymore, even when I run by myself. However...I do find myself singing in my head at the ends of races and tempo runs. It's always The Who - We're Not Gonna Take It/See Me, Feel Me/Listening to You (Tommy) or Eminem - Lose Yourself. Lately Viva La Vida by Coldplay has been popping in too (oh wait, this isn't the Guilty Pleasure Songs thread!)

That song is an awesome kick!! Don't know if you listen to NPR, but Peter Sagal (the host of 'Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me') said in a Runner's World interview that he ends every run with that song. That's how I heard about it!

  • Too many to list, but here is an anecdote.
My Zune has about 2000 songs or so. Shuffle will usually do for me, but one particular 6-mile run's songs were just one inappropriate, unmotivating song after another. (Monk? Next! Portishead? Next!) Suddenly, at mile five, an authoritative, mule-kick rhythm of a cowbell (!) reported into my ears. It was in absolutely precise sync with my cadence. Then THAT GUITAR LICK. Three drumbeats later, Mountain's "Mississippi Queen" pumped me up so much that I swear I could have broken through the Steel Curtain and make first down. For the next few minutes, I owned the world. Shuffle--sometimes--completely rules.

I posted the full list here: http://www.kathyruns.com/315/mixtape-sacramento-marathon/

    Fav's from the list:
    1. Hey Ya! by Outkast
    2. Incvincible by OK Go
    3. Dirty Little Secrets by The All-American Rejects
    4. The Cup of Life by Ricky Martin
    5. Feed the Animals by Girl Talk

  • in reply to what Jamie W. said:Gotta love Stevie!! They played that song in the grocery store the other day... I felt like taking off running with the shopping cart! It's always odd to hear songs from my running mix when I'm not actually running.

This happens to me all the time! I don't have Signed, Sealed, Delivered on my mix (maybe I should get it), but whenever I'm out doing errands and here a song from my list I feel like taking off on the run!

My friends make fun of me for it all the time...

Personally though, Nothing can keep you (well me anyway) moving like:
    1: Soilbleed - Grendle
    2: Veil - Cydonia
    3: Horrible Dream (XPQ-21 mix) - Ayria
4: Ice Queen - Within Temptation. (great for those winter runs)
5: After the Flesh - My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult

Just a sample, I have about 200 songs along the same lines set to random.
I have NEVER walked during a workout.

And nothing is better at the peak of a rough workout then Grendle's version of Zombienation.

Although I've downloaded 3 Nike+ mixes now (this one, Aesop Rock/All Day, and the Crystal Method one) I've only used them for running one time each. Since I teach exercise classes to a continuous mix format I have a hard time running to a continuous mix (feel like I have to keep my movement in time with the tempo and that I should be shouting instructions or something, not just running ;) Variety is lord and master on longer runs - these have helped me on the eliptical, tho'.

I had a hard time picking five from my running playlist, so I may add another top five when I'm in a different mood.

Here's what I finally selected as some of my favorites for getting amped up, in no particular order- plus one bonus song that's a recent addition to my running list.

    1. Heavy -- Collective Soul
    2. Extreme Ways -- Moby
    3. Sabotage -- Beastie Boys
    4. The Distance -- Cake
    5. Head Like a Hole -or- The Hand That Feeds -- Nine Inch Nails

Newest addition to the running playlist:

    It's a New Day -- will.i.am

  • These are the songs that rocked my half (I listened to more, but these are the ones that really mattered):

Nah Keseyi (Annuals) - an excellent start
Dirtywhirl (TV on the Radio) - winding up...
Mercy Beat (Holler, Wild Rose!) - powerful, ascending
Lightsonic (Groove Armada) - focused, driving beat
Confessor (Annuals) - got me up that first incline like nothing else!
Road to Recovery (Midnight Juggernauts) - techno move-ya!
Northwestern Girls (Say Hi) - a little variety in tempo, big finish
Children of December (The Slip) - great guitar and rhythm
Being Bad Feels Pretty Good (Does It Offend You, Yeah?) - tempo...just what the 80s geek in me needs in the middle of a long run
You Get What You Give (New Radicals) - most fave one-hit-wonder-workout-song (the whole chorus is "don't give up! / don't let go!")...chimed in at about mile 12.5 and carried me home

  • Lot's of great songs I'm going to add to my iPod to run too. Thanks for the ideas. One story. I ran the One America Mini marathon (Half-marathon) in Indianapolis last May. They started the race with "Thunder" by AC/DC. It was wild hearing 30,000+ runners Screaming "Thunder" I thought I was at a rock concert. Fired me up but there were so many people it to me 11 minutes to get to the starting line and I was in section M. Poor people in section Z. :-)

    Suburban Little white girl, hahaha.

You have, by far, the closest training music that I have, that;'s awesome. I cannot listen to singing when I am running. Well there is a couple of exceptions, most of my songs are hardcore, vulgar and just damn right nasty:

    1. Vica Versa -- Pastor Troy
    2. Bia Bia (Remix)-- Lil Jon
    3. Re-Akshon -- Killer Mike
    4. Iron Man -- Ozzy
    5. Are You Ready? -- Creed

I see you got a Neo Soul/ "Conscious" Rap thing going on.

Try Talib Kweli's Reflection Eternal... That whole album you can listen to without skipping a track.

    4. Love Shack - B-52's
    5. Listen to your Heart Remix - (I can't remember who did this....I actually got it by accident. I wanted the non-remix but I love it. It is 5 minutes long and high beat.

  • I listen to music while running to set my pace. So i keep alternating between slow ones and heavy ones. But the beats should match my running cadence(steps/min). So what works for me this way, need not work for someone with a different cadence.

The fast ones that help me pick up pace:
    - Rammstein stuff
    - Linkin Park Stuff
    - Asatoma sadgamaya of Matrix Revolutions OST
    - Metallica stuff (particularly Loverman)

    Songs to maintain steady pace:
    - Most songs from Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron
    - Coldplay stuff
    - some Irish folk songs
    - Blackmore's night
    - Mogwai fear Satan by Mogwai (this nice long 18 min track is perfect for a steady pace)
    - Muse stuff

  • Don't have specific songs I listen to, just a playlist on random. Top bands include U2, Rage Against the Machine, Smashing Pumpkins, Nine inch Nails, Street Sweeper Social Club, Shiny Toy Guns, Arkells, Radiohead and Gaslight Anthem at the moment. There are lots of others but I love the more intense songs especially when trying to push myself longer or faster.
