Trail running in/near New Orleans

asked almost 2 years ago | Report

I'm from Wisconsin, training for my 1st 50k ultra.

In a few weeks, I'll be visiting New Orleans and will need to run 22 miles as part of my training. Is there anywhere to do this? I'm eager for any recommendations!

  • You can run on the Lakefront of Lake Pontchartrain, through City Park (http://neworleanscitypark.com/) and along the levees of the Mississippi by Audubon Zoo all the way down River Road (http://tinyurl.com/ybbkjab).

Have fun. And eat a lot of beignets after your run. :)

  • There are levees along the Bonnet Carre spillway (between Laplace, La and Kenner, La) - these are usually compacted shell surface. The base of the levee is compacted river sand covered with grass. The spillway has some trails plus it is connected to the river levee which goes on forever.

The levee system from Audubon Park to Destrehan is covered with asphalt (bike path) but it is used by joggers and walkers. The base of the levee (usually both sides) is/are suitable for trail running

  • If you're up for it, you could drive across the Causeway (the longest bridge over water in the world, awesome, I know) and run on the St. Tammany Trace. It's a rails to trails project and might be a neat way to see another part of Louisiana. It takes about 30 minutes to get there from the French quarter. According to their site, "This 31-mile asphalted trail and parallel equestrian trail connects five communities--Covington, Abita Springs, Mandeville, Lacombe, and Slidell." (http://www.tammanytrace.org/about.shtml).

Then after you're done running, stop at the Abita Brew Pub and try some Abita Beer (oh how I miss it!), if you're going soon, they have their Abita Strawberry, which is definitely worth trying. Although, you might get hooked. (http://www.abitabrewpub.com/)
