How do you wrap a knee for runner's knee?

asked almost 2 years ago | Report

I read on another site to start taping from the inside of the knee outward, but that seems counterintuitive ---isn't runner's knee caused by the kneecap beig pulled towards the outside of the knee, causing tracking issues? Shouldn't you wrap to pull the patella towards the inside of the leg?

Thanks!

  • Try this site: http://www.sportsinjuryclinic.net/cybertherapist/front/knee/cmp/taping.php

As far as I know, patellofemoral pain (knee pain) can be caused by mis-tracking in any direction (depending on the muscles that are over/under developed). Theoretically I don't see why it can't be pulled too far left or right.

I'd advise you to go see a sports physiotherapist and they should also be able to show you how to tape your knee to prevent your pain.

  • Are you considering using KT tape? If so then the directions are included when you buy it. I would advise either you purchase KT tape or buy a knee wrap that has an area cut out in the front for the patella. Both of those options would work better than using the old fashioned tape.

  • I used KT tape and blogged about it here, it works really well http://quadrathon.blogspot.com/2009/08/getting-tweet-for-kt-on-itb.html

  • I talked to a PT once who seemed to think that the only advantage to wrapping one's knee was the placebo effect, and I tend to agree with him.
