Do you really gain muscle weight through running?

asked 9 months ago | Report

I can only find conflicting information on this... I can't tell if it only applies to athletes or it's a myth spawned by people who continue to overeat while exercising or something else altogether!

I'm currently on a low calorie diet aided by my exercise. I'm weighing myself weekly to keep tabs on my progress. I'm wondering if the change in my muscle mass will be negligible (I've only been at the running for a month or so) or whether it will actually make a difference to my weightloss. If so then I can keep that in mind while tracking my progress.

Any advice would be great :)

  • I gained 5lbs after running for 1.5 months. My body fat is lower; but I gained a lot more muscle on my calves, some on thighs. What I did, and still do, is feeding myself every 2 hours; and I make sure I get as much as protein as I needed. (I am not a heavy eater.)
In your case, I think, you would gain some muscle. With long run/walk, after your stored energy in your muscle depleted, your body start to burn fat. Muscle weights more than fat in the same volumn. Judging simply by weight is not so accurate. I suggest you take pictures of yourself and compare it week after week.
