I get the kind with the little silicon buds that can be changed out with different sizes. When you get the right size for your ears, they stay in really well. My current pair are Phillips SHE3580s; not superb audio quality for a real audiophile, but plenty good for running where you're listening for little details in the music that would take focus. I've also had a couple pairs by Koss that were pretty good. I'll add I find $20-40 the range for running earbuds, less and they tend to just fall apart. More and your investing in audio quality you just can't hear when running.
Just a side note, I've been leaving the headphones at home much more the last couple months. While I thought the loss of music would make running much harder, I've actually found its very enjoyable to just get in my own head for a while. If you haven't, try it for a couple runs and see what you think.

I really like the Bose in-ear headphones but truth be told, I've burned through two pair in the last two years (sweat seems to corrode the rubberized coating of the wire leading to breakdown) and they are costly to replace.
My trusted running store just recently fitted me for Yurbuds and the sound quality is excellent and they stay put. Bonus that they were priced right around $30/$35 :)
Good luck!

Ah, the holy grail.
Currently using Philips SHQ1000, which are working well. Previous best were a pair of silver clip-on JVC sport headphones (I can't find the model number). The Philips do provide good sound quality (to my ears!) when the buds sit correctly in the ear - there is a little protrusion that should be directed into the ear canal. My faves, however, are Skullcandy Icons, but not really buds though.I've tried loads of phones and my best tip is to get hold of some spare foam bud covers - I've found these hold most buds in my ear, even if I have to use a couple on each bud. Weird, cos I have pretty small ears!

Yurbuds are gaining popularity very quickly. From what I understand, the sound quality isn't anything to brag about (although not terrible, either) but they're specifically designed for athletes to stay in place while training. If that's what you're after, they're supposedly the standout choice.

I have a set of Erik K.'s Phillips. Nice fit, but running seems for me to jostle them out. I have a set of the Sony sports type (sorry, can't tell the exact mode. since I haven't had the paperwork since after buying them). Plusses - almost impossible to loose, also sound decent enough for running (Great sound may be elusive for a runner). Downs - they feel bulky (everything anymore seems bulky to me, it may be a personal issue). On the side...I have to agree with Erik on one thing. Depending on feel, I leave the MP3 player home half the time. I enjoy being more in touch with my surroundings. Kinda cool to hear coyotes panting as they run not that many yards off to the side.
