Can Yoga/Pilates produce the same results as a weight room at the gym?

asked 4 months ago | Report

I need a game plan for working out exclusively at home - I used to work out at a gym and know how to strength train using elaborate gym floor weights. Can I get the same results to aid my running with a Yoga/Pilates, hand weights and a mat?

  • I do Bikram Yoga once per week, but I do it more for recovery than strength. However, there are a few poses that are good for strength as well.
All I know is that for me and my imbalances that have caused injury in the past, yoga has worked wonders to help correct those factors - whether it is tightness in the knees or hips, balance, etc. So it doesn't help my running directly, and I still do circuit strength training at home once/week, but it helps keep me from getting injured. But I doubt you'll get the raw power results as you would from weight lifting.

  • Yes. I would recommend getting a pull up bar though that you can attach to your door frame. A good friend of mine does all of his training at home and is in "gym" shape. He does a lot of ab work, push-up, pull ups etc. If you're worried that eventually you won't have enough resistance, you could add wrist/ankle weights or a weight belt, but I think that you will find you'll get the results you're looking for just with body weight. Best of luck to you!

  • Yes, I think you can do everything at home with some creativity. I do Yoga at least 1X a week and I think that is why I have been injury free for years now. I average 30+ miles a week so I really believe that using yoga helps strengthen my unused running muscles to ward off injury.
