I'm just wanting to know if there are any runners out there who have scoliosis?

asked 4 months ago | Report

I am a little bummed about getting the news just days after my first half that I have scoliosis. I was told to stop running. I did for three months, and I felt absolutely horrible and gained wieght. I started running again, actually my pace will probably be like walking to the awesome runners. :) But the point is I love it and I'm so hooked. If there is any one out there with this condition, I sure would like some inspiration. I also decided to find a doctor who is a runner and see what his/her take.

  • Hi Brenna,
I have scoliosis, albeit a very mild form. It has never stopped me running. If anything it keeps my back and neck mobile. It does mean I do run with what's called a "chin thrust" where my head bobs forward almost like a chickens bobbing clucking movement (if that makes sense?!!) which to bystanders can look a little awkward but it's just the way it is. I can't say ignore the doctors advice, afterall they are professionals, but for me it won't stop me from getting out there. Just take it run by run and see how it goes. Best of luck to you and feel free to FR me if you want any advice or support!

  • I got disqualified from doing Air Crew because the Navy says I have scoliosis, but they haven't told me I had to change one thing in my life. We have to run 1 1/2 miles every 6 months or so, so I figure if there was a reason to have to stop they would have told me I had to take the other cardio options for the semi annual test. Also considering I just finished a 15k, I don't feel like it made a difference anyway.
