Reduction Mammoplasty and Running/Recovery

posted about 2 years ago | Report

After having lost about 70 lbs I am having some reconstructive surgery (yay me!!!). I know the basic rules of my recovery, but as I have been running a bit (5Ks and 10Ks mostly) I am curious if anyone on here has had something similar and how they approached getting back into running after. I know I will be a better runner once I am recovered, I just don't know any other athletes that have had this kind of surgery so thought I would put it out there.

I am thinking I may follow a C25K program like I did when I started, but am just looking for other input.

Thanks!!

  • You really just have to take it at your own pace, and what feels ok to you. Some people might be up and running very quickly, while others take longer to heal, and to drop the swelling from surgery. It took me several months after surgery to feel like I could run without pain.

  • I'm curious about this too. After having had five babies, even though training has given me real ab muscles for the first time in my life they are covered by loose, wrinkly skin. I am thinking about having a mini tummy tuck right after ironman (June). But I want to run some smaller races at the end of the summer. I'm guessing that six weeks would not be long enough for recovery. "several months" is pretty daunting, I love running too much. My first consultation is in March I guess I have some choices to make.

  • I am hoping that I can actually begin walking within two week of the surgery for the shear mental release if nothing else. I don't want to damage anything by getting ahead of myself, but if I can be up and walking the day after having my babies...I can do this right :)

Will keep you posted. If you want to friend me I can post updates and let you know if I have learned anything!!!!

  • Did you have c-sections with your babies? Be careful-better to start with walking. Low impact = less stress on stitches and such. Good for you on the weight loss! Keep moving, but listen to your body and take it easy.

  • Yes c-section. They made me get up.

I have a plan to take it easy - I want this surgery to go well and I don't want to hurt myself because I make any mistake.....thanks for your support!
