You'll find that this isn't the first time this has been asked in the DM Community. This is probably well within a "normal" range for yourself. However do note I am not a doctor so I have no formal training to pass along here or base my thoughts off of. I use my 20yrs of running as a kind of guide.
I can push myself on warmer days when running speed to above 200bpm. We are all built with different thresholds. My resting may be lower and I may be able to get higher than you. Doesn't make me any more healthy or faster than yourself. It just is. How long have you had the monitor and have you even even close to this in the past? Was it hot out that day? Was it a hill you've never run? What was your eating habits the day of the run?
A lot of these things can have an impact on how your body reacts during times of stress. I'd be one to bet that you are well within "your" range.
GL out there!

I was definitely hauling butt up a hill, then recovered fairly quickly. I've had the monitor a few months. I ran on empty....but was hungover, ha. No but there have been other times that I've gotten above the 188 mark and worry that my heart will explode. I'm just curious what the average max rate is............

Saturday AM runs for me are the worst. I just can't say no to a few great beers on Friday nights. I know for fact those tend to be my slowest pace and highest in HR. Sort of makes sense. Which is why I had asked.
Lowest at sustained race pace: 140 recorded on my Garmin.
Highest HR recorded at faster than race pace: 209 recorded on my Garmin.-- For what it's worth.

I think the rule of thumb is 220-Age= Max HR.

Hi Tara, 188 is a high score if you go all the time at this level. Punctually you can get 188 or more. But be aware, when you go at those levels you can get injuries easily. At least you can explain it, it means you are alive and satisfied. Congrats !!!

Tara, first I apologise for necroposting (posting on a dead thread). Second, I usually run at about 138bpm but hungover on a treadmill last week while doing a slow run I hit 184.

wow 138 is slow...my resting hr is 50, but average run is about 160-177...that's about 8 or sub 8 pace....maybe I'm out of shape still!

I think this changes person to person. I know a guy who runs his FAST runs at around a 160-170 bpm HR, *MY* fast runs and races are usually high 180s and 190s and sometimes low 200s! My easy/long runs are around 150s and my resting HR is between 48-55 bpm. Hills will definitely get your HR soaring. I LOVE hills. In training that is. HATE them in races... =)
