Do you get sore?

posted 11 months ago | Report

This was a question a running buddy asked me the other day: Do you get sore? It struck me as funny, I guess, because although I run a decent amount (20–25 miles a week) and am always pushing myself to run farther, faster, I never get that muscle soreness that I did when I first started running, or that I've felt after a sad winter of not-running.

But should I? Does this mean I'm not pushing myself hard enough—not forcing my muscles to go lactic? Or is my non-soreness evidence of proper nutrition/hydration?

  • Could be a bit of both, I think. If you are taking enough nutrition, then your muscles might be able to repair more quickly than others. I have found that by running everyday, I tend to be less sore after each run, but after an intense run, I still feel a little tinge of soreness. Maybe try to increase your mileage a bit next week, I bet you'd be feeling a bit of soreness after hitting 30 miles.

  • Most of the time I don't but here lately I have been trying to add some speed work and and more miles to my long run.... after speed work my abs are usually sore for a day or two.. After long runs my legs may have a little bit of soreness but not much.... My abs are usually what feel it the worse... I guess because I have a weak core..

  • Did 18 miles on Sunday and was kind of sore on Monday! Guess that's what I need to do, eh?

  • I think the should you feel sore part depends on what you want out of your running. If you're running to have fun and be fit - I wouldn't change anything. If you want to maximize your speed or distance, it means you have the capacity to push further. I'm just starting to run more miles (I did 30 last week which my all time high) and only get sore when I push myself. Right now I have sore feet - but that's from working on a roof last weekend, not from running. My current goal is to run my first 1/2 marathon in September without dragging myself across the finish line. I'm starting early and trying to build mileage without getting sore often. It appears to be working so far.
