Chia Seeds

posted 6 months ago | Report

I am reading a book by Christopher Mcdougall called "Born to Run". I have learned quite a bit from this book and also opened my eyes to barefoot running. Before running the San Antonio Rock & Roll Marathon last month, I ran into Brian with Altra shoes. He is an ultra runner and has some great shoes http://www.altrazerodrop.com online and in select stores. I mentioned the book and he stated that he had read it and lives for Chia seeds http://www.vitaminshoppe.com/content/en/dave_foreman/chia.jsp I then went to Vitamin Shoppe and bought 2 bags for a total of $15. I now use it in my oatmeal in the mornings and really do feel better throughout the day.

Do any of you use Chia seeds? I also heard of Chia Tea http://www.achivaenergy.com/Acvhiva_Energy_products.html do any of you use it?

Also, if you have the book Born to Run, you will have read about the Tarahumara corn beer... Wish they sold that in stores, anyone know how to get some?

  • I try to eat chia seeds - the problem I have is method of consumption. An ounce is a LOT of seeds - so volume becomes an issue. For a while I was just loading up an old pill bottle with seeds and pouring them into my mouth. But the problem with that is taht I'd spend the next 15 minutes picking them out of my teeth. I tried putting them in my morning drink and having it on my way to work during my commute, but the way it all gels up reminded me of swigging used dish water. Recently though, I've taken to getting empty pill capsules, filling them up, and having a few of them in the morning. Much cleaner, but also far fewer seeds - so I don't know if it's really effective.

I never noticed that much of a real difference, to be honest. But then again I've been eating a nutrition food bar (cliff, balance, etc) in the morning every day for years and years now (along with omega-3 pills) - so whatever nutrition chia seeds have, I've probably already been getting it.

If I could find a good way to consume the full ounce or so on a daily basis, and could get in the habit - I'd really like to see if I could tell a difference after like 3 months of consistency.

Yea, I tried eating them whole but that did not work even with water. I am happy with them in my oatmeal even eggs too.

  • I grind them up and put them in oatmeal or my homemade gu recipe (honey, peanut butter, molasses, salt, water).
