Is it ok to do a long run the same day as air travel?

asked almost 2 years ago | Report

I have a 7.5 hour flight coming up in a few weeks, and I'm hoping to squeeze a long run in on the morning of the flight. I normally have some minor swelling in my feet and legs after long runs. Does anyone know if there could be health risks?

  • You should be fine. Your only concerns would be pooling of the blood in the legs but that would occur if your were to run and then get on the plane within a few minutes, which is very unlikely with security these days. I actually would recommend it since the effects of your run would help you feel better throughout the flight and potentially reduce any negative effects, such as blood pooling, from sitting so long. Just be sure to do a cool down of some kind, very easy jog/walk or stretching, to facilitate blood flow out of your legs.

Blood pooling from sitting for long periods can cause dizziness if you sit up quickly and even potential heart/health problems, which is why airlines recommend to get up and move around during those long fights.

    Good luck!
