The best way to start running is to do exactly that - run! Since it sounds like running pretty strenous for you right now (as it was for me when I started), start gently but running for 1 minute, walking till you get your breath back, the repeat. Check out the Couch to 5K running program as good start. It's available here, but that's a good start!

Getting to a point where you get breathless equals running too fast. Try and slow down, a good rule of thumb is; if you can't talk in full sentences while running, then you are going too fast.
Don't be embarrassed to take walk breaks as necessary to bring your heart rate down. Try not to rush things, I promise it gets easier faster than you think.answered about 2 years ago |Report

Hi Karen,
Here's my suggestion and I'm only recommending this because it's how I got started. I know the idea of trying to get into running is an overwhelming one. Because there are various programs and such like Couch to 5k, but in the end, you need to do what works for you, and that's the most important thing.
I, just recently, have been able to simply run. I started my quest for running in September 09. My plan of action was to use an interval method of run/walk. I started off slow (and don't go out with a bang), and would run for 60 seconds and walk for 2min. I used this method for awhile. I mean, awhile. A few weeks. Once I and my body became adjusted, I took it up a notch.
Please be careful just starting out! It's very easy to overdo it without knowing it.

I started off running on the treadmill. However, running outside is a way different ballgame! I jogged at a comfortable pace for as long as I could and slowly just picked up my pace. It's just an ongoing process...just jog comfortably and your body will get used to it. Simple yet it works!
