  • Your own body weight works well - push ups in particular are a great upper body toner.

I'm not sure what else you are referring to? If you own some dumbbells there are tons of upper body exercises from really simple (bicep curls, shoulder press, chest press, etc.) to more complicated which you could find in magazines and/or web sites like Women's health, Shape, Self etc. You can also use resistance bands for most of those exercises if you don't own dumbbells.

  • Resistance bands! Get a resistance band kit ($30-$40) that comes with a long-length heavy resistance band, figure-8 band and a circular band. You can do almost unlimited exercises with these things when you learn how to use them right... and you can take them anywhere! Nike makes a great kit.

  • I have 5 lb weights so that is what I use. I also use resistance bands. I have to buy some more weights at some point but the 5lbers are fine for me. I am just toning. If you have never done push ups you can start with wall pushups.

  • I definitely agree with those recommending body weight! Im a personal trainer and I use a many types of equipment but NEVER neglect body weight exercises! Dumbbells are great because they are inexpensive and you can do a lot of things with them but when you manipulate your own body weight, you more fully engage, not only the target muscle, but secondary muscles. It can make you stronger and more toned faster than many other forms of lifting if your form is good. It also promotes core strength. I find many, many people can perform lifts with weight but are unable to do pull-ups/push-ups and the like. They are not as strong as they thought, they just learned to manipulate the weight. I love my perfect push-up bars! I'm not so wild about resistance bands. They don't offer uniform resistance, like cables, which are excellent for toning. They good for travel tho.

  • Walmart had a set that you can adjust the weight on the dumbbells. Not sure how much they are but would probably be all you need for dumbbells (as opposed to have 5 or 6 different weight sets) Also look into the P90X videos. That is a great core and upper body work out.
