Calculating Basal Metabolic Rate?

asked about 2 years ago | Report

Hi all,

I have been trying to find an "official" way to calculate BMR so that I know what calorie amount I should stay around in order to lose weight. There are so many websites... but I don't want to sabotage my efforts by choosing the wrong one and then eating more than I should. (I'm aiming to keep my calories consumed about 500 less than what I expend each day... in order to lose 1lb each week.)

I'm completely clueless when it comes to this health stuff, but in the last 24 hours, you guys have motivated me more than you can imagine.

If you have a link to what I'm looking for, that would be great.

  • The only real way to get your specific number is to get tested in the lab. The test is painless and only takes about 30mins. You just have to be able to sit and relax :)

Otherwise, most of the counters on the web are "close enough". I've used the one on livestrong.com and its pretty close.

    Best of luck

  • It's true, you need to get it done in a lab to have a real number. Mine calculated to 1623Kcal, my actual is 1380Kcal in a lab, done 6 times. It's quite hard to do as you have to stay awake while laying down resting, and to make it worse, I did it early in the morning each time.

Like anything that's calculated for the general populous, it's averages and estimates.
