Argh...twisted ankle 2 weeks before first half-marathon...advice?

asked about 2 years ago | Report

Anyone have any quick recovery advice? Hurts pretty bad but can but can somewhat walk...probably should be on crutches to be honest. X-rays showed no fractures but swollen pretty good and is a nice black/blue. Have been doing the normal R.I.C.E. treatment but the swelling isn't much better. Happened yesterday morning around 8am. I usually handle pain pretty well but this actually started to bring tears to my eyes when it happened...pain probably combined with the thought of not running in two weeks. Anyway, if you know of a miracle cure I'm all ears! Thanks!

  • Sorry to hear about your misfortune. The only advice I have is to not rush your recovery and take a long view of your running career. Better to miss two weeks now than 6 months later from over-doing it.

  • The best answer/support I can give you is to give it lots of rest and lots of ice for a few days. In about 3-4 days the swelling should be down enough that you can start to SLOWLY regain some good movement and walk a bit. Personally, I would do the half marathon anyways :) Even if you have to walk most of it, the feeling of accomplishment, knowing that you trained for it and did it - regardless - will be something you won't forget. (Although, I do not suggest doing it if putting weight on it is against doctor's orders. You don't want to hurt it further and not be able to run for a long time.) Keep us posted, and I hope it feels better soon!

  • Sounds like you're doing the right things. Listen to your body and keep it moving as much as you can without it hurting more. (active recovery)

You may make it, you may not.

I missed my HM last month due to injury and it was a pretty emotional thing. So, instead I reset my goal and am training for a full one.

Good luck. There will always be another HM, but you've only got one ankle. (oh wait... you have two? :) )
