Anyone hypothyroid?

asked 8 months ago | Report

I'm having major issues with losing my hair. My prescrip doesn't come up for renew for another month or so...and frankly hasn't changed in two years anyways. ANyone have any suggestions on supplements or anything that will stop the drain from clogging up in the morning...I'm afraid to look in the mirror for fear one morning I will be bald! Weight loss tips are welcome also. I've been running 3 times a week all summer and for the most part eating clean and the scale doesn't budge a pound.

  • You should call your doctor. I have been hypothyroid for years and my medication (levothyroxine) continues at the same dosage; however for some people, it is very hard to regulate the dosage. Of course, it depends on the results of your TSH test which you do every 6 months. I experience some rapid hair-loss 3 yrs ago when I changed my eating habits, started walking a ton; eventually losing quite a bit of weight. The loss stopped and the hair grew back once my weight loss slowed. I think I made too many big changes all at once and my hair was telling me to slow down! For you, perhaps too quick of a lifestyle change with the running?? Just guessing......do consult your doctor!

  • I agree with Kathy. My dosing actually decreased when I lost weight and became more active.

As for the weight - for me it was a long battle that took time and took not only cardio but strength and flexibility as well. I change up my workouts on a pretty regular basis because it only takes a few weeks of the same routine for your body to get used to it.

So yes, call your doctor even if your prescription doesn't come up for refill for another month.

    Good luck :)

  • I too am hypo. Yet have been off meds for a few years now. The doctors simply could not regulate them. Was on syntroid, changed to levothyroxine, but no luck, then with a lot of diet changes and some exercise I finally have the levels in check but still draw blood every six months to be sugar. I just restarted working out (walking for now) after a bad fall. I do need to loose weight and also get more oxygen in my body.

  • I have hypothyroid as well. You really need to call you doctor, sounds like your meds need increased or changed. I went for a year without being diagnosed because my doctor's nurse forgot to call me and tell me. because of that I was depressed and ended up with premature ovarian failure. It was a difficult year but I pushed thru it. My doctor was amazed that I could run, I felt like I weighed a ton. Sorry for getting off track. Call you dr. and I hope you get it straighten out.

  • I too, am hypo - I've taken a low dose for many, many years. Probably the doctor could answer you best, go see him/her now - although, I have not experienced hair loss through low thyroid. It is a terrible thing for a woman to lose her hair. Perhaps it is stress related?

As far as weight, I am healthy thin. In the past I always watched my caloric intake and practiced yo-yo dieting ALOT. Today, I just eat well and get on the scales about once a mth. - I am very active and involved in exercise - running, dragonboating & workouts at the gym.

Exercise helps me to be more alert and less tired, I don't notice myself crashing as much. I am not starving, I eat reasonably and have fruit/veg snacks.

  • Hi, Georgette! I am hypothyroid and have the hair loss issue, too!

I recommend a product from Arbonne called PhytoProlief. I have used it off and on for years and I definitely notice less hair loss when I use it. It's a hormone balancing cream. I don't sell it, so no, I'm not advertising it for my own benefit. :) I just know that it helped me so it may help you. Check it out.
