Running while sick?

asked 9 months ago | Report

How do you know when to start running again after a cold/sinus infection? I'm trying to determine when it makes more sense to run so I don't lose fitness or rest so I can gain strength to run. I hate missing my runs! There's nothing worse than being sick and not be able to run...so depressing!

  • I have always tried to get out when sick, unless I have a fever. My reasoning was that running ups your heartrate, and temperature a bit, which would kill the germs, like a fever does. Most of the time I have felt better after my run but again... I haven't been really sick sick in a long time.
Disclaimer: This is something I do but I haven't read anywhere that this is the right thing to do lol.

  • It is very frustrating when illness knocks you back. The general rule is if it is above the neck then OK for easy workouts. Any chest problems, aching limbs or joints or if you have a raised temperature then no exercise. When you feel OK again go for a short easy paced run. It is far better to take an extra day or so recovery than to comeback too soon & put yourself back for several weeks.
