When i ran really really fast today i tasted copper in my mouth?

asked 10 months ago | Report

I'm training to increase my speed for an upcoming 5k and i was trying to decrease my 1 mile 10 minute time by a few minutes so i started increasing my sprinting pace mixed in with my jogging pace and when i was done with my workout i was sort of dizzy and i tasted copper in my mouth. I drink a lot of fluids and eat very healthy and lean meals and never skip breakfast and i take a vitamin omega 3 pill twice a day. Should i increase my fluids or protein? Is it the vitamin, cause I've been taking it for almost a month or so? I used to run track and i run routinely but I've "never" had this happen before.

  • I have experienced the same thing and it is only when I am running at my max speed. I've also searched for answers and as of yet I don't know the answer but I found a few possibilities that make sense. I noticed that everyone that describes the phenomenon says it only happens during very hard workouts (near their max heart rate and their lactic threshold) or sometimes in cold weather.

I found a couple possible explanations on the Livestrong web site:
"a mild form of cardiac underperformance" - http://www.livestrong.com/article/322820
"alter the structure of the pulmonary blood-gas barrier" - http://www.livestrong.com/article/417325

Sounds serious, and I guess it could be very serious. Basically it is another sign that you are pushing or have pushed your body to it's limit. Whether this level of exercise is beneficial or not is probably a question for your doctor.
I would be curious to see if the frequency of the coppery taste drops along with your mile splits.

  • I know that people who are in the middle of a heart attack say that they can taste copper.

  • thats very interesting. I always get the metallic taste too, someone chalked it up to a mild asthma but thanks for those links....
