  • Oooooh I like these questions.

92km/h. It was awesome. I've hit 85km/h a few times, I can normally crank out 70km/h on a descent if I pedal through it. Super fun.

  • Somewhere around 55mph during The Climb to Clouds Century ride. Goes up Mt Wachusett toll road and then back down. A bit unnerving when you get brake fad at 50. ;-)

Wow that's insane!! I used to think my lowly 15 km/h was fast.

  • 52 mph (83.7 km/h)...all I could think was PLEASE don't flat now!

When I was riding a lot there were several places on my normal routes where I could hit the low 40s if I worked for it...and I usually would 'cause that's a lot of fun!

  • Somewhere in the low to mid 50s. "Please don't flat now" comes to mind. You have to put a lot of trust into your machine at that point. "Did I double check the quickrelease before this ride"?

That's right. Before ever attempting something like that, you have to know that your headset is tight, your Q/R skewers are tight, tires are new-ish and properly inflated, know the road and any potential hazards...gravel patches for example...and just that the bike is generally torqued up and good to go. And you've got to be confident and know what you can and can't handle. And don't divert your eyes and thoughts from the road.

  • Being that I live in South Florida, hitting speeds in excess of 45 mph are rare because of the flat terrain. The fastest I have gotten to on the flat ground with a strong tailwind and a leadout was 42 mph. Just last month I was on Vacation in Ashville, NC (a must do for all cyclists). I got to get on some real hills, this is when I hit my highest speed ever on a bike 56 mph. Of course I didn't know it until I finished my ride. Going that fast requires ALL of your attention, no time to look at the speedometer. I am glad I was so caught up in the enjoyment that blowing a flat didn't enter my mind, that might have made me a little more careful and maybe apply the brakes a little.

Lol nah, just find a bigger hill, hold on tight and let go of the brakes! :P

  • 42mph downhill during a century ride in GA. Wahoo! I would have gone faster except the road was crap and at the bottom of the hill was a blind left turn.

  • 72 mph. During road race, trying to catch the field on the descent, after a long climb. Yeah, a little nuts.

  • Bike riding and insanity are different. I thought 30 - 40 Kmph is good enough to be called as zipping.
Either you guys are Gods or you are Devils, for it is not human to test your equipment like that!

  • 52.0 mph according to the bike computer at the end of a short (200 ft) downhill. No wind. The GPS said higher, but lets go with the lower of the two. I physically couldn't spin any faster than that in my top gear as the protective gear I was wearing at the time interfered with my ability to pedal faster (kevlar lined motorcycle jeans). I tried again on a bike with panniers... 48 mph. Those panniers really block a lot of wind.

I limit myself now and ride a fixed gear with brakes. If I am pedalling too fast, I'm going too fast for safety.

haha, well when the average pace of a 30+ man peloton in a road race through a winding crit course is over 40km/h, being able to descend a hill at 70+km/h is a prerequisite for having the skill and confidence to be a part of that group. Basically what I'm saying is that it's part of the territory of being a good competitive road cyclist.

  • Not nearly as fast as some of these guys, but I topped 35mph on a downhill on my triathlon last weekend and it was a first for me.

  • i've just started road riding in the last few weeks but i have managed to get up to 65 km/h. coming from mountain biking, that is just plain insanely fast.

  • 40mph ( 64km/h ) it the top speed for me and I was pushing as hard as I could on the little hill that is on my commute.

  • I can't drive 55 but I did it on my bike going down Tumbleweed Hill in Austin.

  • 50.3 down South Mountain in MD - but there is a monster curve and you have to brake... Sadly since I moved to Ft. Lauderdale I don't think I will be seeing those speeds anytime soon...

    posted over 2 years ago

  • Between 85 and 90km/h on the cut coming down from North Vancouver - got really scared when the speedo passed 85 and I stopped looking (later discovered riding this hill on a bike is illegal) Very odd to be passing cars on a highway when they're travelling at the speed limit. The looks on the faces of drivers I was passed was priceless. The oddest thing was not the brake fade, but the feeling of absolute stability. The bike was only going to travel straight. Thank god the curve at the bottom of the hill can handle high speeds.

  • 99kmph (62mph), slipstreaming a truck down a big hill near my old home in South Africa. My speedometer maxed out at 99, but that's the speed limit there so couldn't have been much over.

I guess it's kinda cheating, almost feels like nothing until you pull out from the slipstream and it feels like you've just thrown a parachute out behind you.

Highest non-assisted 92kmph (59mph), on a really short, really steep hill, was very happy that my MTB's disc brakes could bring me to a very abrupt halt for the intersection at the bottom.

  • 59mph on a MTB?? I was assuming these speeds were on high-end road or tri-bikes, not MTBS! Wow.

  • 152 mph back when Montana only had a "safe & prudent" speed limit.... oh wait, you mean a road bike, not a bike-bike. :)

  • in reply to what Runs4brains said:152 mph back when Montana only had a "safe & prudent" speed limit.... oh wait, you mean a road bike, not a bike-bike. :)

Did Montana actually have just a 'recommended' speed? Was it like an Autobahn?

  • 43 mph on a descent but had to work for it. Not many big descents in the Chicago area. As for the slipstreaming I would slipstream behind the UPS semi-trucks leaving one of their hubs near me and be able to maintain 35- 40 mph (35 was posted speed limit) for 2-3 miles until I had to turn off.

  • 48.4 on a long flat stretch it was at the end on a interval day and i still had some juice left so i burned it at the end of my workout

  • 80kph on a descent and 55-60kph on a balls out sprint in the flat

    posted about 2 years ago

  • I hit low 50mph (80kph) in on a bridge in St. Paul, MN. The speed limit for cars was 30mph and I was praying for no crazy drivers, flats, or failures. I don't think I'll be doing that again any time soon.

Flat-land, balls-out sprint was about 38mph (61kph). I definitely didn't hold that for very long. Partially because of the stop light :)

  • fastest i ever hit was 34mph on a singletrack mtb trail..... it was a downhill with alot of skinny trees within 12" on either side of my handlebars! at that point there is zero room for error, and you just have to hold on and hope you make it! LOL the whole time i was thinking i hope my quick release is tight, and its gonna hurt really bad if clip a tree with my bars! and to make it worse, a week before i rode that trail, someone did clip their bars on a tree, and he left with a broken collar bone.....ouch!

  • I've gone up to 74Kph/46Mph on my XC bike on some of the short hills around here. It feels real stable and smooth with the front fork locked out and semi-slicks on. No brake fade as the the dual piston hydraulic disks are the bomb.

  • 68Mph coming down one of the Cottonwood Canyons (don't remember if it was big or little)around here. The friend that was within a couple feet of me the whole time had 72Mph on his computer. Felt solid the whole way even as we passed a couple cars but a crash sure would have sucked!

So far on my new bike Specialized Tarmac was 47.5 with a 35mph wind at my back down hill.

The cars were going by so much faster that I didn't even "feel" the speed until I glanced down at my speedometer.

  • 47mph twice, coming down the Kanc in NH, and the big descent from Lake Placid to Keene, NY last weekend. Unfortunately, both times I had a really strong headwind or else I could have gone faster. I was also lucky in NY because it's a 35mph road and a friend got a ticket there last year!

Did you do Fitchburg this year? I was there on that Friday spectating. A friend was racing for BRC, and we wanted to see Lawson Craddock race.

  • Recently, 39mph on one of the descents at Stone Mountain. I really have to work to get it there though. I do recall one time in Sydney, Australia in an area they call "The Spit", I was coming downhill so fast on a highway there that my front end was shaking...or was that me because of the semi truck behind me?!!
