Suggested workouts for an indoor trainer

posted 5 months ago | Report

I recently picked up a CycleOps Fluid2 trainer that I want to use over the winter to improve my cycling. I'm relatively new in cycling, so I am a tad rudderless when it comes to what kind of workouts I should be doing among the myriad of those that show up when I do a google search.

So I'm asking the masses for suggestions on workout routines or general guidelines or other resources to follow that will maximize results. I have a HR monitor, and I have a speed sensor on my bike, but I have no way of measuring power output (aside from the published graph by CycleOps that equates speed to power, but I don't know how much I trust that).
If it helps, my goal is to finish the Ironman Lake Placid bike course (7000' of climbing) with enough energy left over to do a marathon. So I'd think power development would be helpful - although I plan to do some tough hill workouts in the spring, so I don't know whether it's worth even thinking about that at this point yet.

Thanks!

  • The Spinervals DVDs by coach Troy are a great place to start. There are 30ish to choose from, ranging from 30 minutes to 90+ minutes (IIRC). They will keep you in shape during the winter, but nothing will make up for riding on the roads.

  • I recommend the Sufferfest videos. They're awesome!

  • Checkout Trainerroad.com. They have done the math and can show real time power output from your trainer with ANT+ devices. Very good stuff.

I just found out about that site the other day - very cool! I had to order a USB stick (the forerunner 305 doesn't come with one like the 310 or the 405), but for the cost of the USB stick ($30 or so) plus $10 a month, it's a hell of a deal. I'm a tad suspicious of the accuracy of the reported power w/o a power tap and only going by inputting in which trainer you have - but as long as the precision is there to provide a baseline for comparison over time, thats all that really matters.
