Counterfeit Bicycles

posted 7 months ago | Report

A friend of mine from North Carolina clued me into a growing problem - counterfeit bicycles. Whoa...is nothing sacred? Apparently not. You can find articles around the web detailing some of the instances of this. There has also been cases of bogus apparel such as fake Specialized cycling shorts and jerseys.

Buyers are advised to check serial numbers on bicycles with the manufacturer. For clothing, the details are different on fakes.

Has anyone here on DM run into this?

As always, Caveat Emptor!

  • I hadn't known counterfeit bikes was a thing, but you CAN buy carbon frames from the same factories that make name brand ones if you just look a little bit on the internet. I'm not terribly shocked about apparel counterfeiting because, well, it happens all the time.

  • if the bike I just bought off ebay is counterfeit- they did a heck of a job. The replication is absolutely magnificent and it rides like a dream.

  • Just yesterday came across a site with (I would assume) counterfeit bikes... at least the prices make me thing they're knock-offs. Check it out...
