Cycling Trainers - Looking for recommendations

posted 7 months ago | Report

I'm looking in to getting a cycling trainer and would like to hear your opinions and/or recommendations on which trainers are good, worth the money, and which are not.

My budget will support a pretty reasonable array of trainers... but nothing that's computer integrated... but a magnetic or fluidic trainer is well within my range.

For example: I've been looking at the Kurt Kenetic Rock'n-Roll... from the descriptions it looks like it would give me the most outdoor like experience. Any thoughts?

  • I have a Blackburn Trainer (the old centrifugal resistance unit, starting it's 5 winter) it's solid as a rock and quiet. During my fitting I was using the new Mag trainer by Blackburn and it seemed to be the same build quality.

The Rock'n-Roll looks good. I would like to see one in person. I would be concerned about wear in the rocking connection, seeing it would give a better idea of durability.

I liked my rollers (other than the real estate they require), they seem to give a great riding experience, and engage your core more than trainers do. Have you given them a thought?

  • The two that I always see coming up on the top of the lists are the Kurt Kinetic Road Machine and the CycleOps Fluid 2.

  • I bought the CycleOps Fluid 2 and love it. Quiet if you put it on top of a mat or a blanket or something. I think that if you get a trainer, you should give up on even trying to come close to a real outdoor like experience. There's just no point. On the road, I can stay in the saddle for 6 hours at a time no sweat. On a trainer, my butt hurts after an hour. I think it's more important to get a good training video to watch, I use the ones at The Sufferfest exclusively because that has me focusing on the workout and pushing myself and performing the intervals as opposed to remembering that I am not actually outside.

Also, make sure you get a climbing block regardless of what trainer you get - it is a TON more comfortable.

  • just picked a fluid 2. it is great. very quiet, very smooth. i have spent about 8 hours on it in the last 2 .5 weeks, and so far i have no complaint. once you have it setup for the first time the rest is easy.

Thanks... that's kind of the direction I think I'm headed (Fluid trainer). Now its just a matter of getting it ordered.
