I do it all the time. I live in the boonies in eastern Indonesia and can't get cycling shoes here. I'm going to the States in a couple of weeks though for a few months and one of the things on the top of my shopping list is cycling shoes. I use old running shoes to cycle.

I ride wearing sandals, running shoes, trekking shoes..
daily office commute is 10 kms one way.
PS: Since its an old bike, maybe a lil lube on the chain and derailleurs might be a good idea. Also check the tire condition.
