The couch to 5k program is always a good start - but taking you at your word about health, maybe instead of actually running, you could substitute speedwalking, or just faster paced walking? It would get the HR up a bit, but not be as intense as actually running.

Hi Trish!
Welcome to Dailymile! I sent a friend request :]Walking is an AWESOME start. Especially with fibromyalgia, you'll wanna start slow . . . then GROW! :] I definitely agree with Ryan's suggestion of Couch to 5K, but even just starting with 10-15 minutes of walking a day, or a couple times a day and then going up from that is fantastic. I'd also suggest yoga for flexibility and muscle strengthening, or aquafit -- there may be classes in your area for people with fibromyalgia.
Most importantly, you're here and wanting to learn how to help yourself by getting active, and that's GREAT! Feel free to message me if you'd like some more thoughts! [I'm a kinesiology and applied health student, so I LOVE this kinda stuff :]]

The best advice is first - Start... get out there and walk. Try to walk a little farther every day until you get up to 2.5 miles. Then start intervals of walking with speed walking (2 minutes walking, 1 minute speed walking) at least a couple times a week, you don't even have to go the full 2.5 miles... just a good 20 minutes of intervals.
But the big thing is doing it. Whether its a long stroll or a power walk... getting out there and doing it is what its about.
When I started my program I weighed in at over 340 Lbs, I lost 100 lbs over the course of a year and I've kept it off for 2 years. To be honest, it takes commitment and it takes support. You'll need to provide the commitment... but as to support... well, we're here for you.
Trish, I know you can do it, I know you can make it happen, you just have to start... and then stay with it. One key thing... Post your workouts, post when you don't workout and tell us why, because there's one thing we understand here... we know its both hard to get started and easy to stop... but we also know and understand that the longer you keep at it the more likely you'll be to enjoy it and find it both fun and enjoyable.

Thank you for your support. Really appreciate it. I can use all the help I can get right now.

Gotta echo Bo...getting out there is the best advice. When you're up to walking a couple of miles, I recommend the c25k program. I'm doing it right now and if this overweight 50 y/o can do it I know you can as well. Friend request sent. :-)

FR sent. I started with a couch to 5 k program in my community that included weekly training sessions with the group. My race was far from victorious, I finished in just under an hour and had to get 2 bags of IV fluid but I found out I enjoyed running. I also like listening to the Slow Runners Club podcast. It makes me feel better knowing that I'm not the only one mixing running and walking and reminds me that sometimes the end of the pack is where the fun is. I started this running thing at 260 lbs and weighed 280 at the 5k. My doctor got some of my medication adjusted and I'm down to 225 now and running a half marathon next week. I'm not done yet but I'm having more fun running than ever.

I too just started walking. My main reasons are, first getting back in shape, second scared myself at the doctor when I saw how weight creeped on me, third due to health reasons I can no longer delay such. I have a good friend who is a runner and brought me here and looking for others in similar situation and support.

Hey Trish,
I know what you mean...It's HARD!! I have fibromyalgia too. I tried the couch to 5k plan. yeah, that definitely is not working. I cant even walk around the block, so I resorted to something I can stick with. I do wii bowling w/ continual side steps. And you'd be amazed at how much my bowling scores have increased as well ;). It keeps me going. I cant do wii bowling without the urge to walk in side step fashion. I LOVE it!! I am working on changing eating habits, but I am hoping the exercise will help w/ the weight and help me regain some muscle strength.. plus give me energy or reduce fatigue.
