What is proper/best form for elliptical cross-training?

Of course, I know that running and biking are excellent cross-training exercises...but I'm sure the form utilized makes it so. In other words, I tend to "run" on the elliptical on the ball of my foot, so I "think" I'm mimicking a sprinter's muscle development. My husband, on the other hand, tends to push down on his heel, so I "think" he is mimicking more of a walker's muscle development. Which one is best for cross-training?

Also, I tend to keep my legs right under my hips. It would seem to reason that you should spread your legs to the far inches of the footbeds in order to exercise different muscles...but would this promote injury? Thoughts?
