I know about 10 people who've tried it, and they all say good things. None of them look considerably better than they already did, but at the same time, I don't think any of them do it regularly enough. Most of them stopped after a week or two. That might be because they're lazy, or might be because it wasn't agreeable. But I've not heard anyone come out and say they disliked it.
What I do know is... It is not a running replacement. It will not improve your run, more than running will; And it doesn't bring all of the health benefits that long distance running does. From what I've tried of it, with my friends who have it, it's higher impact than running. Higher impact exercise usually requires considerably more maintenance as you age.

I've completed one round of P90X and like you used to be a big gym rat. I lost about 27 lbs during my first round and but gained back some of it due to inactivity and some personal stuff going on with me. But definitely it works if you keep at it, the most important part of any workout program is the diet portion. I personally did not follow the P90X diet plan just did my own thing with protein shakes and eating right. I'm on my 2nd round now and plan to improve upon round 1. Here are my results from the first round. http://www.dailymile.com/groups/1364-beachbody-series-group-p90x-insanity-chalean-turbofire-etc/photos/63073 Not a lot of change physically but down 27 lbs and I felt great. (I am not a beachbody coach and have no interest in being one)

P90X is truly an amazing workout. I did not follow the order of workouts adequately, as I was more excited about the arms/shoulder and abs workouts. I took the exercises from those routines and added my own, and those two alone changed my body tenfold. You DON'T even have to do the whole set to achieve great results. All it is, is dedication and hard work-- you CAN do your own thing after you learn the workouts well enough. I did not follow their recommended diet program, however, I am very strict and I always have been, so food was not a problem for me. If you eat very cleanly, it won't be for you either. =) I highly recommend it. 10 months of lifting + cardio I went from no muscle to 12.5 inch biceps, (for a girl that's not bad) and 14% bf to 8.6%. I think you will love it- you truly have to put your heart and soul into it though. I worked out for 4 hours a day.

Hi, I'm new to DM and running, but have been doing P90x on and off for the past year so I think I can comment on it. I did it for 3 month pretty consistently (about 4 days per week or more) last spring and saw a lot of positive changes in my body. Then the kids were home over the summer, vacations, then got sick with Lyme disease...I fell off the bandwagon. This winter I'm rededicating myself to working out again, but mixing things up with running, P90x and other workouts.
As for P90x itself, it is like any other workout - you get out of it what you put into it. If you follow it exactly as spelled out you will get fit - but that includes not only the workout schedule but the nutrition plan as well (which I didn't follow at all). My husband was hard-core on the workout about two years ago, followed the exercise plan to a T, and did modify his diet somewhat but was not strict. I saw huge changes in his body. Since I didn't follow any diet changes, my body changes were not very "extreme", but still noticeable and I was ok with that.
If you're ready to dedicate yourself to an extreme lifestyle change, then P90x will get you fit! The workouts are great, very motivating and fun. Tony Horton is a great "personal" trainer.answered over 1 year ago |Report

P90X is a great workout, but your not gonna get super ripped with a perfect 6-pack in 90 days like they make it seem......dont buy into that, BUT you will get in much better shape.....its designed around mixing up workouts, and not doing the same old routine.....and thats the way your supposed to work out, shocking the body with new stuff, and keeping the body guessing is the key to faster gains. its also not easy, its hard to do the workouts, unless your already in good shape, so if your out of shape, be prepared for a kick your butt workout, cause it switches things up and its fast paced.
also its very important you follow the diet, it dosent have to be the P90X diet, but you need to change your diet if you want to see results, if your doing P90X and eating pizza and fast food all the time.....its a waste of both your time and money.
i know a few people that use P90X when they are "cutting" after they did mass gain lifting, then they drop the calories and do P90X with alot of cardio, and it works for them, they go from bulky muscle to pretty lean and "ripped" but like i said they are doing alot of extra cardio and really watching their diet.
so its a good investment if its in your budget, and if you are the type that will stick to your workout.

First of all - way to go Jeremy. The photos sure show what you achieved!
I am just finishing up week 10 of P90X and I love/hate it. But, in all honesty, it is an awesome program. I started to see results after the first week.
You can't compare it with what running as it's like comparing apples and oranges, BUT, you will get in awesome shape from following the P90X program. At roughly $1.50 a workout (over 90 days), who can lose. You will need to stay motivated to put in that DVD every day and get going on your workout and that is sometimes hard. (As I sit here writing this, I should be doing my workout)
Here is a very thorough P90X review that could help you decide whether the program is for you or not - http://online-running-gear.com/blog/running-gear-3/p90x-review/

I agree with what Travis wrote earlier, you won't get super ripped in 90 days but you will see an improvement. At least in your weight. Stick with the program, use it in addition to your running. I used the stretching and yoga dvds while training for my 2nd marathon and it kept me injury free.

I have done a full, strict round of P90X and then a few somewhat 1/2 rounds. It does work, but to achieve the results you see in the ads, one would need to do multiple rounds, and follow good nutrition. It definitely made a difference in my body and it did make me stronger and more capable of banging out other exercises. I would say go for it.

P90X is an awesome workout. If you follow the tapes you will see results. They have a great variety (13) of workouts so you won't get bored and Tony is pretty cool. There is a diet book that goes along with it. I didn't follow the diet to closely but otherwise I would say it's worth it. This is not anything like the gym this is cardio along with muscle so you won't get huge you'll just get ripped and lean.

It's no different from any other work out; it depends how seriously you take it, how regularly you do it, and whether or not you balance it with a good diet.
My friend (who was on it) insisted that he was going to get in shape faster than me because it was foolproof, unfortunately for him it's not lazy-proof.answered about 1 year ago |Report

My experience with it is that you get out what you put in. You can make it as tough as you want. If you want a little more mass then bump up the weight, if you want more cardio just hit it a little harder. I tracked my weight, BF%, lean muscle and fat and I actually gained a little weight (muscle mass) while cutting the BF% down. Now after the first few weeks I started to drop the body weight steadily. This is an awesome program and worth trying. To get 100% benefit you must stick to a clean diet with the correct ratios of fat, protein and carbs
