At Home Workouts

asked almost 2 years ago | Report

I want to start working out in addition to running (just started swimming, and will get back into biking too). I have a set of dumbbells and was wondering what type of workouts I should do to make the best use of my time.

The only thing I could think of is squats and maybe that workout where you are just holding the weights and tip toeing to work out your calves. Any suggestions would be helpful, thanks!

  • I would add a resistance band and a ball and you could do lots of things. I start with hamstring and hip stretches. Then on the floor I do glut lifts and one legs glut lifts. I then do a long abs series and some more core stretching. I do other exercises without weights too. I do arm exercises with the weights and leg exercises with the band with a little arm thrown in.I use the ball for wall squats but there is a lot more that can be done with the ball including pushups, planks, hamstring curls and more ab exercises then I can even mention here.

  • Phong~ I have been incorporating home workouts into my training since La Jolla. Mostly Jillian Michaels and kickboxing. I was recommended rockbody.tv by a friend of mine. I just did my first workout of hers...and holy moly...it is the hardest workout I have done in a LONG time. I started with the 20 minute cardio workout. It consists of 5 parts. She uses interval training and it went like this.
    ** All intervals are 20 seconds long then a 10 second break for 8 rounds**(so 4 minutes)
(If you have a smartphone, I just downloaded a free interval timer app and you can set up your intervals and that way you have a counter!)

    Part 1
One legged mountain climbers. Here is the link to her video for this segment.

    Part 5

Anyways, just a suggestion...but I really was stoked to try it...check out her other workouts, they look pretty hard core.

  • I would really look into the Beach Body workouts. I'm doing Power 90 (Beginners to P90x) and absolutely loving it. You use dumbbells or resistance bands and your body to workout.

  • I do the P90X workouts. The set is a 6 day/week (optional stretch on 7th) but my time is limited so I replace the cardio based workouts during the week with running. I'm really enjoying it so far. As others have pointed out, it's light on the gear, which makes doing it at home easy, even if you're low on space.

  • Hi Phong-I really like Cathe Fredrich videos. She has resistance and cardio training. I especially like her mixes of both and her HIIT(high intensity interval training). You can find her videos at Cathe.com or collagevideo.com Good luck

  • One of the Beachbody sets like P90 is a great intro to exercise dvds, but there's a whole world of video workouts if it turns out that you like them. I'd recommend going to

for a great overview of the choices out there. And a great place to browse is

  • I added the 30 day Shred DVD by Jillian Michaels - it has 3 levels of circuit training - each only 25 minutes, but boy does it pack a good workout into a short time. I really feel that this has helped me lose a few extra pounds and a few seconds off my pace. I think it was ~$10 too, so I figured it was worth the try as PX90 and Insanity were a bit over my budget.

  • I've done the P90X workouts and tried Insanity, but right now am combining other at-home workouts with my running training schedule and have been liking the Jillian Michaels' workouts on the "Be Fit" channel on YouTube. Several of them combine handweights and nearly all are full-body workouts. Some are as short as 20 minutes, which is nice to jump into after a run.

  • Another vote for checking out P90X - specifically the Legs & Back workout for what would be most effective for biking and running, but also the core and ab ripper workouts as well. Most of the other P90X stuff - shoulders, chest, biceps, back, etc - aren't necessarily helpful for running/biking (some would argue they hinder you in those activities), but I like to hit them occasionally to help keep proportions.

  • Hi Phong, I like to do some 'cross training' and weights on my off days from running (I only run Mon, Wed, Thurs, Sat)
On my cross training days I do elliptical workouts as well as upper and lower body weights.
For upper body, I do 3 sets each of biceps, shoulders, triceps and back. Very simple popular moves. Takes me about 10-15 to get thru the 3 circuits.
For lower body, I do a routine by 'The Firm'. I have done it so much that I have it memorized so I can do it now while watching a show on Netflix or something =) It takes me about 20-25 minutes to do that. It has different squat sequences, step ups (they have a step called a 'Fanny Lifter' that is abou 16" high and you stand on top and step back 16 times per leg and you do that whole thing twice), they also do lunges, plie squats and side leg lifts. I added 3 sets of calf raises into that workout.
I also do 100 push ups after every run (5 sets of 20). I had to work my way up to that for a YEAR. A year ago I couldnt even do ONE 'normal' push ups, and now, the most I have done at one time is 40. FORTY! So keep working at what you want to improve on and it WILL get better =)

  • I recently read an article, and for the life of me I can't remember where it was, but it was either Runners World, Active.com or something like that, and it compared various workouts and which ones had the best impact on running performance. The person tried P90X, Crossfit, etc. and the program that they recommended with the best results was called Kemme Fitness (www.kemmefitness.com). Some of the workouts could be done at a gym, but there is a lot that can be done at home as well. The website specifically lists workouts that you can do based on the equipment you have on hand, or no equipment at all. I haven't tried it yet but I am definitely eager to.
