I rarely do any weight/core work. I'm also interested in seeing if anyone has any information.

I think it depends on how much time you have to devote to your workout and in what stage of your training cycle you are in. Hills are always a great substitute for the weight room if you can't find time to both run and lift. I usually do circuit training in the gym, low weights, lots of reps, and not much if any rest between exercises. Try to keep your heart rate up similar to going for a run. Some favorite exercises are seated rows, lat pulldowns, front dumbbell raises, quad extensions (be careful and really control this exercise especially on the way down), walking lunges, and lots of core exercises.

This is a pretty good website for resources and general information on a variety of different topics. Nothing too specific on strength training for distance running but it's a good resource.answered about 1 year ago |Report

Weight training is key to injury prevention. What Nate suggested is very good. With the XC team, we do two days of lifts. One day will be power lifts and the other will be more speed oriented. A lot of work will be done in runner specific moves. I also can't stress core and hip drills. These prevent lower back pain, allow you to run upright and not hunched over and give you a six-pack.
If you need specific things, I can find some in my team files.
