Bulding up endurance.

asked over 2 years ago | Report

I've been wearing a back pak and slowly adding weight. What do you think? Any other suggestions.

  • Like my running, walking hills would help build your endurance. Also simply adding another mile every other week or so, and soon you will be walking as far as you want to.

    I hope this helps.... ( :

Interval training is one of the best ways to build endurance. You will also get much better results from interval training than you ever will with constant pace cardio such as running, cycling, etc.

  • I do something like that every now and then when I'm getting ready for an extended backpacking trip. For several weeks before the trip, I'll substitute a couple of runs each week with a brisk hike up one of our more demanding local trails while carrying some dumbbells in my pack, plus I'll take a long dayhike each week with a much heavier pack than I really need. I don't view this as a way to build cardiovascular endurance, but rather as a way to build up endurance in the muscles needed for extended hiking.

I guess a lot depends on what you're building up endurance FOR! Carrying a heavy pack while hiking uses a somewhat different set of muscles - and in a different way - than does running or even "regular" walking. If you're planning to spend several hours per day for a week or more hauling a pack over mountains, then it makes sense to train the muscles to handle the task. If you want general endurance for fitness, though, you're probably better off just walking or running or what-knot for progressively longer periods without the pack.

Most forms of speedwork that runners do are really more about building stamina than about building endurance. (There is a difference.)
