Question for people who work out with free weights/resistance training

asked 12 months ago | Report

I started working with a trainer 1x week for 30 min. During that 30 min, he kicks my butt with a total body workout. Two days a week I workout on my own. Question is, if I only spend 10 min on arms/shoulders/back, then later in the day do 10 min of core and end the night with 10 min of legs.....which total 30 min but not all at once, am I doing any good? Or does it need to be 30 minutes straight through?

  • You will get the same benefit to your muscle groups, generally speaking, splitting it up. But if you're going for some cardio/calorie burn in there, working for 30 minutes and going continuously from one activity to the next will keep your heart rate up and give you more of a weight loss benefit.

  • I agree with Holly. It would be ideal to do a continuous 30 min workout and keep your heart rate elevated. However if it is not possible don't let that deter you from doing your mini sessions. The main thing is getting the work in. Don't forget to stretch too ;) (i need to take my own advise on that one :P)

  • i agree with Holly and Danny.... your doing good by just doing it. it is a much better and more benificial to do 30 minutes at one time, you will get a better workout, but even 10 minutes at a time is better then 0 min.... also its hard to do a good upper body workout in 10 minutes, chest, shoulders, back, biceps, triceps, forearms...thats alot of muscles to try to hit in 10 minutes.

i would suggest trying to do 30 minutes straight, but if thats not possible, doing 3 -10min workouts is still going to help.

  • Like the others said, splitting it up will still help, but maybe not as much (but hey, if you're getting the work in, don't sweat it :) ) Another thing that you might think about is splitting up your days. I'll do back/bis/shoulders one day, chest/tris, lower body etc. Also, I've heard that core is one workout that it's alright to do back to back (and it helps out a ton with running!)

  • Breaking it up is fine, but if you shower, change and go to/from the gym three times a day, it might be worth your time to do it all at once.
