ive been looking too, and from the research ive done, and from people on here and also friends of mine, they all swear by the Garmin forerunner 305 with HR monitor. it does everything you want, but i hear the calories is not very good though, but the distance and GPS and HR monitor is supposed to be great! i think thats what im going to end up getting. ive seen them as cheap as $120

I'd go with a Garmin 305, you can find them on eBay for around $100. It will give you HR, accurate distance, calories, and a whole collection of other stats. (Make sure if you buy a 305 to check the "includes" list for the HR strap and Sensor. If it doesn't come with one you can get one for around $60 to $80.)

I have a Garmin 305 and love it. It has some very cool features. Check out www.dcrainmaker.com This guy has very extensive product reviews about anything sports related. His overview of the 305 is amazing but he also has reviews of other watches so you can compare

It's not a watch, but I swear by the adidas micoach pacer. Tracks heart rate and pace (via footpod), and gives you audio coaching based on a training plan you setup on the website. Check it out here: http://www.micoach.com

I am using the Garmin 305 (w/o the HR monitor) and love it. For the money it is a fantastic watch.

+1 for the Garmin 305. It is a bit bulky, but that's the only negative I've got for it. Love it.

I have a Garmin 405. I got a great deal on Amazon....$155. You just have to watch the sales. I have a HR for it but have not used it yet.

Another one for the 305, especially at the price point.
It's calorie estimate for running is pretty close (about 125 calories per mile), but its calorie estimate for cycling is way off (by a factor of about 2).
In the end, anything you get will be an estimate, unless you have equipment analyzing exhaled breath to measure O2, CO2, etc.answered 8 months ago |Report

Garmin Forerunner 305. Great watch. Was worried from reading a few of the forum posts on the net, but I think all those are old problems. Working flawlessly for me.

As an option you can buy iPod touch and use application Cyclist PRO: http://bit.ly/okoCIM
It supports pedometer mode, external HR and stride sensor. So, you can use it for HR and calories measurements. It also can calculate calories based on HR and provide voice feedback on current HT zone (very helpful).answered 8 months ago |Report

I love my Garmin 405. Although the 305 is just as good just a little more bulky.

I have a Garmin 110, and it's great. It's very basic (especially compared to the 305), but it has the same access to garminconnect.com. Using that site gives you a ton of feedback on the performances of your workout. Plus, it's not as big as other watches. So, it doesn't look weird wearing it while not working out. It also should be cheaper than the 305, and it can come with a heart monitor. I hope that helps!

I use a Garmin 405CX and wouldn't trade it for anything. It approximates calories for you with or without the HR monitor. I have not used the HR monitor yet, but plan to soon. This watch has tons of other cool features. I travel abit for work and I love to run around the cities that I'm in. The watch has a 'back to start' feature that will guide me back to my place or origin if I get lost which I tend to do sometimes. My favorite function is the 'virtual partner' which really helps me keep a desired pace and will let me know if I'm ahead or behind. Will be using this to keep my pace at my race this Saturday. Garmins site has a great compare feature you can use to see differences between models which is helpful. Many of my running buddies have the 305, but it is just too bulky for me. The 405 is much more sleek and it is packed with features. There are decent videos of both watches on Youtube you can check out also. Cheers
