Felt S22 and other "gateway" tri-bikes

asked almost 2 years ago | Report

I'm looking to add a tri-bike to my fleet. What are your thoughts on the Felt S22? I'm strongly considering getting one for my upcoming 70.3 in September (which I need to start training for). Even though I'm female, I'm built like a dude...I'm 5'9" and 150ish pounds and am pretty long legged and have a long torso. I've done sprint triathlons on my cyclocross bike and realized it's limitations. I'd like to get a more serious bike for some more serious business and am definitely leaning more towards a tri-bike than a road bike with aero. Thanks!

  • First thing with a new bike you want to consider is your price range. This is going to determine wether or not the bike is carbon fiber or high grade aluminum alloys as well as the components on the bike. The felt is a good entry level bike. Buying a TT bike does have its limitations though. You would be riding your TT bike all the time; training on hill and road conditions that can become a pain due to the decreased control capabilities. The Felt s22 is a solid entry level tri bike. I have never rode one but on paper it looks solid. It has some ultegra components and has a carbon fork and crown.

Some other options that i feel may be in your price range and possibly better bikes are as such:

Cervelo was the most popular tri bike rode in kona the past 3 years. They produce quality bikes, they fit people well and lets face it they perform. Felt also has a good track record for quality and performance. Bottom line is you should ride a bunch of bikes within your price range and choose the bike you like from your riding experience.

Another thing i should add is that the tri bike is going to give you the aerodynamic advantage ver a road bike. Another thing you might consider is an aero helmet or zipp wheel upgrades to a nice road bike.

  • Personally would upgrade to a b16 instead of the S22. Its only a few hundred dollars more and you can get a full carbon frame, along with better components. I own the B16 and love it! I ungraded to a zipp disk wheel and 808 and i keep up and even beat people with more expensive bikes. I'm also 5'9 and 150 pounds and I ride a 54 cm fame, but always have your local bike shop fit you, even if it cost it's worth it! Hope I could help?
