I've not run Big Sur, but have done my fair share of hill running. I think the key is to get yourself accustomed to (or at least familiar with) the hill gradient that you'll see there. The website for the race should have an elevation profile with incline gradients...just shoot for something similar to that. Also, take advantage of those steep hills near you - run some interval repeats up them once every week or 2 (around 5k or 10k pace with recovery back down the hill and 30-60 seconds walking rest at the base). After running repeats up steep hills, longer hills with less incline won't seem so bad.

No advice on the treadmill but I highly recommend this marathon, it was my favorite. I found it helpful to take a one minute walking break at every aid station (about every two miles). That got me through 24 miles before cramping, and able to finish comfortably! Last bit of advice is to not worry about PR, enjoy the scenery and camaraderie.

Thanks for the responses! I'm looking forward to Big Sur, but very scared. At least I've been able to run in this sub freezing weather!
