I ran my first ultra last fall, the Surf the Murph 50K in Minnesota (close to home). I am currently training for my second, the North Face Challenge 50M Madison, WI. I sent a friend request if your interested, but a great source of information (and my primary source) are from two podcasts: Trail Runner Nation and ultrarunnerpodcast.com. These have been my lifeline so far in my training. Highly recommended.

Got some ultras under my 100 mile BELT buckle, lol. I might be able able to give you a couple ideas on what to try, probably more ideas on what not to try.

Peter K. I'd recommend definitely signing up as soon as possible and running an ultra. I'd even look at this fall. My site is sute for some improvements but I've got some race reports and thoughts on training on there: www.oneaveragerunner.com

Good luck!! I did my first ultra last year (100k hilly trail) and loved it. It didn't break me down so I upped the ante for this year and signed up for the 100M of that same ultra. I got a lot of inspiration and training tips from the book Relentless forward progress and the website www.irunfar.com
The best advice..hands down... don't do/wear/eat/drink anything during a race that you haven't tried out during training!

I've done some ultras / Ironmans. For me, every one is different. One year at Leadville I had no foot problems and survived only on fruit and Poweraid. The next year at Bighorn I was eating boiled eggs, bacon and avocado; feeling pretty good but unable to run because my feet were destroyed. Thats why they have so much food, you never know what you will want / be able to keep down.
I'll be racing Bighorn 100 in June and an Ironman in the fall. I'm sending a friend request if you are interested.

Hey Peter, I'm considering either DWD or the Ice Age Trail 50 for my first ultra next year as well. Happy to be in touch, keep each other motivated. I've run marathons since 2007, and my wife and I worked an aid station for the IAT 50 earlier this month, which was really inspiring. If you've never volunteered at an ultra, I highly recommend it. Anyway, good luck to you, and I'll see you around on DM!

That's an ambitious start to your ultra career! My first (and only so far) was a 50K. I think if I had to do 19 more miles I would have needed an ambulance ride after! Drink lots of water, gatorade, coconut water - whatever it takes to stay hydrated and full of electrolytes! I got pretty dehydrated from too little fluid and was attacked by cramps all over my legs!

I'm training for a 50k in September, my first race ever. Quite challenging having never completed a marathon training plan, but I'm not looking to set any land speed records. I am always looking to give and receive motivation!
