Bataan Death March. Heavey pack race. 26 mile march with a 40lb ruck sack. This is such a great event!

I tend to avoid the hard races. The hardest I've done in the last 5 years is the
Tarantula Run 10K, Los Vaqueros Resv., Brentwood. Very hilly with some very steep ups and downs.posted 6 months ago

It looks like Pikes Peak wins: Elevation gain (start to summit) is 7,815' (2,382 meters); the start is at 6,300' (1,920m) and the summit is 14,115' (4,302m). There is "only" 1 hill though...

I ran that this year. It took 3 hours longer than my fastest marathon time, but I tell you, the experience was a hundred times better. It's an amazing and fun time, so if you want a bucket list race, this is a good one for sure. You are in the presence of some amazing people. The winner, Matt Carpenter, has won this thing like 12 times. Did I mention he is 49 yrs old.

Beachy Head Marathon. 20 hilly miles, mostly trail, followed by the Seven Sisters; 7 killer hills. 3,500 feet of ascent is not the most a marathon has (take the Picnic in Surrey which is a marathon with 6,000 feet) but its that so much of it is in the last 5 miles.

Rodopi Ultra Trail 100 miler (ROUT). Its an ultra-trail race, with Adventure elements. The race takes place along abandoned paths and trails through the amazing scenery of the Rodopi Mountains National Park in Northern Greece. The difficulty of the race - except of the distance of course - is that the region is completely isolated, and there are only 6 aid stations along the route! Dense forests, rivers crossing and wild animals like bears and wolves increase the race's adventure character. You can run for several hours without see any person at all! The positive elevation gain of the race is about 8.000 meters. I ran this race in 2010 and 2011 (4th position in 31 hours 42 mins and 30 secs) and and I hope I will continue to run it in the future! Below, is the link of race's web-site and the trailer from 2010 edition:

Good & interesting question. I would have to say the Arrowhead 135 in 2010; Unfortunately, I was done-DNFed at 102. Unfinished business-toeing that starting line again on 30 JAN. I think the MMT100 is the hardest I've completed, although the OD100 with a 28 hour time limit was also pretty hard. That took 2 tries too. The Escarpment Trail 30K is a really challenging "shorter" trail event in the Catskills each summer.

I'm sure a lot of the longer races mentioned here are difficult because of the distance, but mile for mile I'm going to have to go with Seven Sisters. 12 miles, 3700 feet of elevation gain, terrible footing almost the entire way and I don't think there's a level stretch on the entire course longer than 9 feet.

For me, Grindstone 100. They have this 6 pm start time so you probably haven't slept all day. Then if you don't finish near 24 hours you get into your second night on the trail. Oh, and around 25000 ft of climb. My only dnf. I need to go back for redemption.

Baltimore half marathon. insufficient training, over dressed and bmore's hills made for a challenging race seem damn near impossible to finish.

my second marathon due to girl-cramps and 2 herniated disks in my back! still to this day (20 marathons, 3 ultras, and 1 ironman later) that is the hardest race I ever had to do because it was so painful. The thing that I am thankful for is that I had that run early on so that I know if I could do it that day, then anything is possible!
