The Mile?

asked 6 months ago | Report

Hey everyone,
I'm currently a Junior at an NAIA university and my first indoor season (ever) is coming up. I've spent my Freshman and Sophomore years at a different school running 5k and Steeplechase, but at this new school my focus has shifted to middle distance. I'm sporting a 4:38 outdoor PR from my Senior year in high school and I want to run sub 4:20 this indoor season. Any advice on how I can drop these eighteen seconds? Thanks.

  • Work with your coach to identify your weaknesses and then work on improving them.

No point me telling you to go train leg speed if thats your strength... same with Aerobic condition or pretty much any other factor that contributes to a good performance in middle distance.

  • I'm pretty good at advising people in their 40's and 50's on what to do, but for you speedy kids, I'm probably out of my league. But- my standard answer is... more miles (mostly easy). My guess is that you need to be running 80-100mpw (mostly easy, sometimes hard) to build the endurance base needed to drop those seconds. You've gotta' train so that that faster pace feels effortlessly sustainable after 1/2 mile.
