Any other "endurance" or "ultra" cyclists out there?

I did my first 24-hour race last year. What a fantastic experience for a 68-year old rookie. I was wondering if there are any others out there who may not be as old but are as dumb as me? I'd like to exchange ideas and lessons.

  • I also did my first 24 hr race last year. I am 42 and I am still learning. You can read about it on my blog http://apabstsmear.blogspot.com/ if you like. I have some 12 hr races to my credit also. The 24 hr was in April, my first post. I look forward to doing more this year! Let me know what you think

Thanks for the comeback Wendy. My 24 hours was on a road bike doing the National 24 Hr Challenge. I had trained for it from January on using spin classes and bike on trainer in the winter months when riding is a no-no up here in N Michigan. The race is Fathers Day in June and I had about 1300 road miles in before in addition to the winter training. My three goals were: 1) Experience an "Ultra" 2) Complete the first 145 miles under the cut-off and 3) ride 200 miles. It was a complete success as far as goals go finishing with 211 miles. Plus there was all of the learning about pacing, energy management, etc. My app is in for this year and I have been assigned #37. Should be about 400 bikers there. Training is already underway. Same goals except this year shooting for 250 miles.

  • I've done a few 24's, double centuries, and multiday races in my prime racing years. I'm 38, kind of past it as far as being in the money but I still love long rides. Looking at fireweed 400 or great divide race this summer.

  • Hey Chris thanks for the comeback. My guess is that you long ones have been on the mountain bike. Am I correct? And as far as your best days being behind you at age 38! Bull,,,, Right now there are 42 male riders signed up for this years N24HC and the youngest is in the 35-39 age group with 5 men in my 65-69 age group and 2 in the +70. I may not be as fast as I once was but right now at age 69 I can do things on the bike that I could not do 25 years ago when I was doing tris. Think of it as transitioning from being a young bull to being an old bull. Anyway, hope this year is good for you on the bike.

  • When I started cycling in June of last year, I had no idea I could even consider this sort of race. Thanks Richard for bringing this to my attention earlier. This sounds like something I will want to do. If not this year, soon. I have been getting in a good base of miles. I will take a look around to see what might be offered in New England this season. Sounds like my kind of fun!
