I was leading the peloton, until....

My front wheel hit a huge pot-hole, and instead of a graceful recovery, my front carbon fork shattered. All of a sudden, I dropped down, going 30 mph, and got a face full of asphalt. I looked up, and saw the pack moving away. I knew the race was over.

Anyone else with a similar story?

  • 500m to go mark, drafting two other guys who blew up, I was on the right shoulder. I could not get around them, had nowhere to go, everyone started coming up from behind, and I got wedged off the road into the ditch at 40km/h before I could even sprint...by the time I got back on the road, race was over. I peeled off hard on a TWP road and let the curses fly, I should have won that race. I was mad, but I learned some strong lessons from it.

  • My biggest fear is something happening to the fork/front wheel of my bike at speed!! Hasn't happened yet but it is always in the back of my mind.
I have been trapped too and waited too long to fix the problem and gotten 2nd instead of 1st.

  • Ha ha.. !! At the Carol County Road Race (Illinois) a couple of years ago, I took a flyer during the first half of the race and had about a 1/2 to 3/4 of a mile lead when I JUST missed clearing a rail crossing that ended up holding back the race for about 20 minutes while this long, long freight train passed!!! Oh well.
