How do you find races that occurred in the past?

posted over 3 years ago | Report

I completed the Surf City marathon yesterday, and wanted to submit a race report (need points for those soon-to-be Daily Mile Schwag, hint hint!)

Anyway, when you type "Surf City" into the search engine, nothing comes up. I know it's there, but I can't easily get to it. Because I ran it, I know I can go into my profile and find it in my completed races (http://www.dailymile.com/events/4937-surf-city-usa), but how would you otherwise find this race?

Obviously I think that the social community would want to see this information because:
- They are thinking about running the race next year and want to see comments from participants
- Sponsors might want to see first hand accounts of the race
- Organizers might want to see
- Participants want to see other participants comments
etc.

With the system like it is now, there's not really much point in my writing up a race report if nobody is going to see my prose.

Suggestion - In dealing with past/future events, perhaps simply changing the font or adding a phrase that 'This event is in the past' might be sufficient. In the search engine results area, perhaps you could even break out the results by future/past OR somehow mark the events.

Thoughts?

  • We purposefully take races that have already occurred out of the search index. You're right that there are a lot of reasons to find this race though. We'll look into re-adding them to the index, but calling out the fact that they've already occurred as you suggested. Our motive for removing them as only so that users weren't confused -- we assumed people would most likely be looking for the current event.

Thanks for writing all this up, Joe! There are a lot of improvements we can make to events on the site.

  • I just wanted to second the above comment. I took a break from Dailymile for a while, but would like to update my profile with all of the races I've run in the past several months - in order to help provide feedback, make a clear history of my racing.

Sadly I don't always have time to update my profile during race season or before race season - since I'm busy training! But I'm excited and ready to talk to everyone about it once I finish a race, since I'll actually have useful feedback at that point.

Perhaps if you don't want to add previous races into the database again, you can separate the "Race Schedule" from the "Race History" portion of the site - that way we can just manually enter race info, not do a database search, when we enter after the fact - update our season. Although obviously this would remove the usefulness of searching for other members who also ran the race. At this point the Race Schedule features feels a little impotent.

  • I'd just like to add my vote for being able to find and add races after the event has passed. In addition to the races I ran prior to joining Dailymile that I'd like to add, I just ran one that I didn't add before the fact, and now I'm kicking myself for not remembering to add it.

I'd be willing to bet that many, if not most, people only think to add the race after it's happened, when they record it as a workout. And quite often this happens after the day of the event.

On search results pages, some visual separation between "current" and "past" events seems appropriate — where "current" is defined as anything recently passed, or for which there is not a closer future occurrence.

On event pages, UI changes emphasizing the year, including relative time descriptions ("This event happened about 1 year ago," and "This event is scheduled for 7 months from now") should go a long way toward preventing confusion. Also, to aid in selecting the correct event, links to more recent or upcoming annual occurrences of the same event could be provided, as well as to past ones.

Which brings up another point: on a lower level, it seems to me that so many of the events on Dailymile are likely to have regular annual occurrences (much moreso than, say, Facebook) that the ideal event system would be able to elegantly model the one-to-many relation between events (which could be considered to be date-agnostic) and the various occurrences of that event. Just a thought.

  • Hi! I am a new member but would really like to add my race results from past races - I like to keep them in one place so I have a complete history and can do an easy comparison of my results and my progress. Is there any chance of past events being included soon? Thank you!

  • I agree. I ran a July 4th race at the last minute and of course wanted to add it to my profile, but I couldn't since it's after the fact. I think races should be titled with the name and year so that people could easily distinguish between old and new. There are plenty of benefits to having old races remain in the system.

  • Agreed! I only really started posting consistently on here AFTER I ran a bunch of races. Would love to put them into my log. I don't think it would be confusing if the races were listed with the date or year when they happened.

  • +1 to adding races that I have done in the past to my profile.

  • Agreed, if we're using DailyMile to track our activities, it makes sense that we should also be able to track past races. We've got an incomplete history without them.

  • I would love to add my run and race history before I started using DM. I would also like to make a complete backup of my training history including notes and details, not just raw distance and time data. Although I still have to post or update many of the local events, it is a nice way to be a part of the DM community.

  • I just uploaded all my running information and would very much like to be able to add my prior races also! Is there any chance that this feature will be added any time in the near future?

  • Me too for adding past races.

  • i agree as well. i completed the gate river run 15k yesterday and when i got home to enter my time it wasnt there at all to be added! if you can add gate river run 2011 to the races again that would be awesome!

  • +1 for being able to add past races.

It makes sense! I only add my workout info _after_ I've completed the workout so it's logical that I'd try and add race info after the event...

I now have a fair backlog of races I've completed and would love to add them to DM as part of my training journal.

Thanks in advance for being awesome and adding this feature!

  • New to DM, but it seems like a great site. However, this seems like a really really obvious feature to support, yet it's been 2 years and this feature is still missing? Like most people on here, I've worked really hard to complete the races I've been in and I'd really like to be able to add those to the list. Please make this happen soon. Thanks!

  • +1 to the comments above. Being able to add past races to your profile seems like an important and valuable feature (and not being able to do so is unexpected). As a relatively new dailymile user, this was the first feature (or lack thereof) that caught me off guard -- the site has been very intuitive and feature-rich otherwise.

Ben must not work at DM any more, or DM itself has gone on hiatus. This is one more thing that makes this site much more lame than it should be. And the lack of response to a big members' want and need just adds to it. 3 years have gone by, and no response, no change. DM, if you're just not going to change something (especially something so many people want) at least have the courtesy to say so.

Ben still works for dailymile, and we're not on a hiatus. We're releasing the next version of DM version soon.

We're working on making the best training log, and we'll be moving away from races. As a two person company, it's too difficult for us to support both.

  • Kelly, I can see that it would be difficult to try to maintain too much in a 2-person shop. But did it really take 3 years for you all to be able to just say so? Look at all the frustration that was needless during that time. At least a simple response - "we heard you" would have been quite nice and taken so little effort. I truly do appreciate the effort that you all have put into this site. However, a little more openness would be a very good thing.

We typically don't respond here on the forums. The primary way to contact us is to use the "contact us" link at the bottom of the page. We do our best to respond to everything, but occasionally a few slip through the cracks. Not intentional at all, just doing our best to hear everyone out and make a great site at the same time.

  • I've always found the search for races hard and I mean races in the FUTURE. I will type a race into the search field and end up with "no results found." Then I'll GOOGLE the same thing (i.e. "race Cupids Chase Philadelphia dailymile) and viola, someone else has already created the page. I think this is why we end up with 20 race pages for the same race. They're near impossible to find and the search function has never worked for me as long as I've been active on DM.
