Welcome to the pack. I started out 3years ago and was only doing one tri sprint a year then this year I jumped in head 1st for my 1st Half Tri. One I would get is a decent road bike with clipless pedals and shoes ( I use Speedplay Zero pedal with Specialized Trivent shoes), need a suit, goggles, running shoes and so on.
this year I purchased a new wetsuit a Cannondale tri bike. But a road bike will be just fine I rode my 1st HIM with a Specialized Tarmac,
As for plans I have used the Super Simple Half I found in the Triathlete Magazine and am currently using one from the BeginnerTrialthlete web site.
Good look and Have fun.

some generic training plans to give an idea what to do are available at trinewbies.com and beginnertriathlete.com
you need goggles, a helmet and a bike and running shoes. the bike can be a fancy road/tri bike but most newbies start out w/ hybrids or mountain bikes till they get addicted to the sport and get a lighter road/tri bike w/ clipless pedals, aerobars, race wheels and power meters and of course the silly looking time trial helmets.
a trisuit is probably a good idea but isn't necessary for a sprint. it has a small pad in the bottom that cushions you on the bike but doesn't feel like a big soggy diaper on the run. (there are usually no changing tents and tri has a strictly enforced no nudity policy so you swim/bike/run in the same outfit) you could go w/ jammer or speedo if you had to. desoto, craft, zoot, speedo, titanwear.com all have good trisuits

For the shoes thing. Obviously you dont wear shoes on the swim. But when you get out on to the bike do you wear your running shoes? or do you go bearfoot? or do you have some special kind of shoes?
Also how much is bike going to run me?posted 10 months ago | edited 10 months ago

you have your shoes waiting for you w/ your bike when get to the first transition. the type of shoe depends on the pedals on the bike. flat pedal or toe cages means you can use your running shoes. clipless pedals require special cycling shoes that lock you into the pedals http://www.chainreaction.com/pedalfaq.htm the price depends on what type you get but easily over ahundred.
you can find a used tri bike for under $500 but it has to be the right size for you or it's not a good deal. and may require maintenance and a fitting. bikes can get very expensive that is why most newbies start out w/ the bikes they have on hand at first then graduate up as they get addicted to the sport
