Can anyone direct me to a good beginner training plan?

I'm planning on a July '09 Olympic tri and would like to train throughout the winter building a base and preparing for my first triathlon. I'm not in good shape (6'3" 250lbs), but I'm not a complete slouch.

  • For the bike park this winter you should get a fluid or mag trainer. You should also get a few DVD's to help you push yourself. I have 5 Chris Carmichael DVD's and I think they are great. You'll be sweating buckets in no time. You should also have a table nearby that you can put a fan and your drinks on. Good luck

  • www.ontri.com, www.slowtwitch.com, beginnertriathlete.com all have free training plans.

I have used the ones on ontri and tweaked them to fit my needs. I can also look at several books, including the Triathlon Training Bible which will help you understand the point of all the workouts and how to set up your own schedule. You might need a good amount of time to plow through it though...it takes a while.

  • I have been using the couch to 5k running programs off of itunes, there is also a 5k to 10k and i think one more level. Do a search on Itunes for running and they have some different runs.

I happen to like these because as a beginner runner, I found that i was running to far to fast and to hard and would tire out or get really sore. I listen to these on my ipod and it takes you through a progression (i think the one im on now is 10 weeks) and it allows you to improve. There is music that the guy plays, but he tells you what your going to do, for example the first week is a 5 minute walk warmup, then 60 second runs followed by 90 secs walk, i think you do 8 sets total. But he tells you when its time to change. It personally helps me to progress. Not sure if that is what you where looking for or not but I like it

  • I'm currently on the couch to 5k program and eventually I'd like to work up to a triathlon. The program so far as been great. You adjust it to fit your needs. I tend to do more sets than asked and don't ever feel like I'm moving to fast or slow.

Here is a link to the article that has the training plan if you haven't found it already.

  • I did my first triathlon last year and used Triathlon Training Basics by Gale Bernhardt. It has plans for unfit and fit sprint and olympic distances. I would recommend doing a sprint first, just to get a feel for the whole triathlon thing.

Anyway, the book was a really good resource for me. The biggest things I've learned since doing the tri and training this year for a sprint and an olympic is to 1) be consistent with training. 2) listen to your body. Don't start by doing too much because then you'll get hurt.

Good luck and keep us posted on your progress!
