Best triathlon wear for females?

asked over 2 years ago | Report

Hey Ladiesssssss!

I need some help with trying to determine what the best wear for triathlons. I've never done one so I need the inside scope!

Things to keep in mind:
- I will be doing a tri next fall/summer
- I am tall (5'10) - my legs are VERY long so I don't want anything TOO short.
- I am not a fan of any two piece wear that shows the bulk of my stomach (I have a big scar here)

Any and all reccomendations are encouraged and apperciated!

  • This is my first tri too this year. I bought tri shorts and a tri tank top (covers your stomach and everything). I did a practice tri it and felt it was very comfortable! The only thing is if you have larger breasts you might want a sports bra under the top for support. Good luck!

  • While, I can't comment on the girly gear side of things, I can give some general advice. I would use as few things as possible. I have only did one and found that I way over thought it. My suggestion would be if there is anything that you think you might need, but are not sure, I can promise you that you don't need it. For example, bike gloves. Keep it simple, practice with whatever you are going to use and remember to use race day as a learning experience so next time around, you can do even better!

  • this is my first year dong TRI's as well, I have done a few official and "practice" TRI races so far. I have to agree about keeping it simple, I took off on the run with my bike gloves on the first Duathlon I did, hubby still give me heck for that one. Ooops! I was told by one of my coaches in my Triathlon training group to make sure there is no cotton in the content or you will be miserable and chaffed by the end. I personally wear Tri Shorts, Tri Tank top and Tri Bra, I recommend Tri specific because it dry's more quickly and helps avoid the whole chaffing problem. Many of the women in our group go the 2 piece route and many others wear the one piece suit. I think it's what you are more comfortable in, I just felt the top and bottom was a bit more flattering and covers the "bellly" and make pit stops a bit easier. I also know gals that do the swim in a tri bra and tri shorts then throw on a t-shirt over top at the transition. You can also go on line and find different length inseams for the shorts, 7" inseams are hard to find but they are out there. I got my longer shorts and top on Danskin.com for a pretty reasonable price I think it was $30.00 for the shorts and $25.00 for the top compared to $60.00 for each in local stores.

    good luck!

  • I have a longer torso and hate shirts that leave stuff exposed. I have found Izumi tanks seem to be longer. Actually, I like most of their stuff and just replaced my gloves and shorts a while back with their brand, too. :D I did the two piece tank for my tri and it worked well. One thing I didn't think about in my training until I practiced the transition was the hair. I usually wore a high pony tail when I ran or swam and when I went to switch to the bike, I couldn't fit the helmet over the pony tail. Seemed such a stupid thing but would have driven me crazy race day. :D Another thing that was passed along to me that I appreciated...I got a cheap pair of flip flops that I left where you exited when swimming. It really helped because it was a distance from the lake to the transition area and it was covered in tiny little pebbles that would have been a pain cleaning off before you got your cycling shoes on. Congrats on taking on your first tri...you'll LOVE it! :D

  • I just found this post. De Soto makes a tri capri that falls just below the knee, it was great for me last season (I like to have something compressing over my knees, they're a little unstable).
