First Tri this weekend

asked over 1 year ago | Report

So I have been training for a sprint triathlon that happens to be this Saturday (9/24/11). I am really excited, but I have a question for all of you experienced triathletes. What is the best way to keep track of the times? I have a Garmin Edge 500 on my bike, and I wear a Garmin FR60 when I run. They both are great for their respective uses, but I can't really see myself in T1 waiting for the 500 to locate satellites. Maybe I should just forget all that and just go with the race clock? What do you do?

  • it's your first tri right? forget 'em all and focus on finish line. the tri will be a very different experience for you enjoy it. you can worry about breking the course record on your next race. just my .02 have fun and good luck

  • Agree with Joe - focus mainly on the finish line.

The other option is to leave your 500 powered on during the swim so it is ready to go, rather than waiting in T1 for it.

  • I'd go with "forget it" and just enjoy your first race. It is going to be such a great experience! I train with a Garmin 310xt and every time I race, I get so caught up in racing that I forget to hit the lap counter in the multisport mode each time I cross a timing mat. I've never had good data on my own. One day I'll figure it out. For now, it's a great training device.

Good luck and have a great first race!

  • X2, just leave the 500 powered on so it's ready to go. And assuming you use HR you can watch it during the ride and monitor your pace and HR during the run. In my honest opinion I I would not get too caught up on the data during the race. You should just go balls to the wall the entire race and look at your splits later.

And this is very very important...HAVE FUN!

  • i also agree, just focus on the race, get to the finish, and stick with a general idea of times for your first race..enjoy the experience, have fun!

fwiw i would simply hit the lap functions on my trusty timex ironman watch to keep track of my splits..not the best, i guess, but it works!

    have a good time!
