Bikes and Training Plans

asked 10 months ago | Report

Any suggestions on where to find a good bike that won't break the bank?
Also looking for suggestions on swimming form and training plans. I'm already a runner so I feel comfortable in that area but I've never really been taught how to swim properly and I'd like to make sure I do it correcty so I don't waste energy. Anything would help!

Thanks!

  • Swimming - check out the Total Immersion program - I highly recommend this for refining technique - specifically for open water distance swimming. I used to rely a lot of breast stroke until I self taught with this book - http://www.amazon.com/Total-Immersion-Revolutionary-Better-Faster/dp/0743253434/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1312500981&sr=1-1

Bikes - talk to local bike shops and see if any of them host a swap meet - often will happen in the fall at the end of the season when people are ready to upgrade to newer gear for the following season. Also, you could look for websites for local cycling clubs which often have classifieds on their club sites. You can often get a great deal on a higher end bike if you go used - just make sure you know what you are getting. Do some research on fit before you start - you want to start with the right size frame most importantly, then you can make adjustments from there. Here is a good article on bike fit for triathlon - http://www.slowtwitch.com/mainheadings/techctr/bikefit.html

    Good luck!

  • What do you consider breaking the bank? You find decent bikes around $600 - $1000 dollars. The biggest thing is fit go to your local bike shop and they should help be able to help you with what you are looking for. Like I said Fit is the most important part and if taken care of bikes will last a long time and eventually pay for themselves.
Swimming you can join a swim team or higher a coach Swimming is all about technique. I have gotten some info on how to improve via you tube and other stuff from the triathlete magazine and other websites.

  • Absolutely second the Total Immersion suggestion.

I actually just saw a thread the other day where someone was asking about the swim portion. In a reply, I linked to some TI presentation material to help give an idea of what it is all about. The thread is here (http://www.dailymile.com/forums/beginner-triathlon/topics/14158-want-to-tri-but-need-help-on-the-swim) - just to save me some typing :)

  • On the training plans I got mine from http://www.trifuel.com/ they are free and good plans. I'm bout to start my 70.3 program ( Matt Lieto's). Also on the bikes u can check out http://www.performancebike.com/ they always have good sales and cheep on shipping and if u join there club rewards u get like 10% of your purchase for other things. So if u got your bike u would probably have enough for the pedals and shoes, if that's what u wanted. Good luck!
