Road Bike Necessary for first Sprint Tri?

asked about 1 year ago | Report

Hi,
I am doing my first sprint tri next month but I still do not have a road bike. I got into cycling more long distances last year on my mountain bike that have slick tires. I was thinking that it would be fine to try out the race with my current bike then if I end up really liking the sport, then looking at getting a new road bike. What would you guys recommend??
Does it really matter all that much for your first race?

Thank you!

  • Hey! I had the same question but a year ago! For my first tri I used a specialized mountain bike with road tires and it went great! i then upgraded to nice Trek 1500 off craigslist. I would really recommend using the bike you have now-first of all, because you've already been training with it. second- investing in a bike and then not liking the sport can be a real let down ( just like you say). Just wait it out for now. If you get more serious with the sport, you can invest in a used or new road bike. BEST OF LUCK NEXT MONTH- but most of all, have a good time!

  • Perfect approach. It's not about the equipment but your passion for being there. Wetsuits can be rented. Mountain bikes are fine (and yes, the slicks help). The fancy accessories (and there are many) will come later if you get serious about it. Don't spend the money until you know you love it.

  • This is the same question I have. I had no idea there were different tires for the mountain bikes. I have a nice Cannondale carbon fiber frame that is pretty light so I am going to just look into new tires now instead of a whole new bike for my first tri! Thanks!!!!
