Hey Robyn! I would suggest finding a local running specialty store (as opposed to just a footlocker in the mall or something) and have them analyze your gait. They can recommend a pair of shoes that will be comfortable for you and your running style/pattern. This very well may help with the knee pain!
I personally replace my shoes about every 400 ish miles, but usually I can feel the need for them, kind of like you described.

I'm certainly not an expert on the matter but I just did what Heather G. suggested... went to a local runners shop (Fit Nich) and had my gait videoed so that I could see exactly what my feet were doing. Had a bit of pronation so the girl helping me selected a few models of shoe that address that problem. I chose a pair of Nike Zoom Structure Triax. I learned a lot from going to this store and absolutely love this new pair of shoes.

In a recent Runner's World, they stated you should get new shoes about every 500 miles run. Of course, you can track that here. I've learned that going to a specialized running store gets the best results and doesn't cost a whole lot more than picking out the shoes yourself--but you get a MUCH better fit and shoe.
