when to buy new running shoes? and what kind do you recommend?

posted almost 2 years ago | Report

I've notice while running....when I run on my treadmill I tend to run on the outside of my shoe....and when running outside I run more on the inside of my shoe ....is this normal? Also I have a pair of Asic GT-2140's and I notice that they're getting tighter and more uncomfortable right around the middle of my foot. (both feet) Is it time for a new pair? I bought them back in Sept (used them for two 5k and 5k training until early Nov) and have been training about 20 miles a week since January 1st.
I'm not too thrilled with this pair of Asics either.....like I said they're uncomfortable in the middle. I hate it when I'm running and all I can think about is how my feet hurt. :( Also have been having knee pain and have heard that can be caused by the shoes also....
Thanks for any suggestions!

  • Hey Robyn! I would suggest finding a local running specialty store (as opposed to just a footlocker in the mall or something) and have them analyze your gait. They can recommend a pair of shoes that will be comfortable for you and your running style/pattern. This very well may help with the knee pain!

I personally replace my shoes about every 400 ish miles, but usually I can feel the need for them, kind of like you described.

  • I'm certainly not an expert on the matter but I just did what Heather G. suggested... went to a local runners shop (Fit Nich) and had my gait videoed so that I could see exactly what my feet were doing. Had a bit of pronation so the girl helping me selected a few models of shoe that address that problem. I chose a pair of Nike Zoom Structure Triax. I learned a lot from going to this store and absolutely love this new pair of shoes.

  • In a recent Runner's World, they stated you should get new shoes about every 500 miles run. Of course, you can track that here. I've learned that going to a specialized running store gets the best results and doesn't cost a whole lot more than picking out the shoes yourself--but you get a MUCH better fit and shoe.
