Hi! My name is Robyn, I'm 30 years old and a SAHM to 4 kids ages 10, 8, 6, and 3. I've only been running a year and I did 4 5k's last year with my lowest time at 28 minutes and my slowest at 30 minutes. This year I want a challenge sooo I'm signing up for the local 25k. I just started training last week. Thankfully b/c I ran the 5k last year they sent me training guide which included a novice training for 25k. I don't get outside to run very much b/c I still have a youngster at home and it's snowy. I do have a treadmill thankfully! The furthest I've run so far is 3 miles but my guide says 4 miles for Saturday! Thankfully the guide is nice and slow, like today was only a 1 mile run. I'm also trying to lose weight so on these easy days I also walk so that I can burn more calories :)

  • Welcome! I've been back running for 4-5 months after about a 10 year break. I find this is a great community. I've gotten lots of encouragement and advice here in the few weeks I've been visiting the site. Good luck on your training and 25k!

Your plan will probably increase total mileage & "long run" length by 10% weekly with every 3rd or 4th week as a recovery week.
In 6~7 weeks time you'll be doing a couple of 3ml/5K runs as "short runs" and be up to 6~10Ks as your long runs. Stick to the plan and listen to your body. Understand your limitations. Learn to understand the difference between pain and pushing yourself. Pushing your boundaries is good, pain is probably not! Sounds cryptic but in a few weeks you'll understand!
Build in a couple of 10K races into your training roadmap to help you learn about distance running and pacing in particular. It'll also help build confidence as you move to longer distances and races are much easier than pounding the miles alone!
Finally, seize every opportunity to get outside and run on the roads. Wind, rain, temps, inclines, declines etc... are all difficult to replicate indoors.

  • thank you so much for the responses! I just ran outside in snowy windy very cold conditions and I made it 6 miles! I had to walk up a few hills (I could have made it but I was feeling very tired) . Mostly I noticed that my lungs hurt. I don't think I pushed it too hard though, mostly b/c of the snow covered sidewalks and ice. I am feeling good about it. Although I'm scared to think of running for longer then a hour! The 25k will probably take me 2 1/2 hrs (or longer!) to complete. anyway Joe, I do a lot of short runs during the week and the longer run is always on a Saturday. I did the long run today b/c I have no kids home on Weds afternoons so I'll probably try to do my long runs on those days instead :) and then I can run outside!! I'm getting tired of the treadmill esp. for long distances.
thanks again for the good advice. I need it!
