Improvements

Hi all

New to this and really getting into running properly for the first time.

I have built up from 4/5 mile runs to now running 6.5/7 milers fairly happily watching my PB for 10Km drop from 60 minutes to now 55mins 45.

I have 2 targets (which i guess are competing):

- first I want to get fast at short distance, 2KM ish over the next 6 weeks.

- Second I want to build to longer distances eventually the holy grail being sub 4 hour marathon, aiming for mid 2013.

Caveats. I am a big lad, 6'4", heavily built and 17 1/2 st. I am mixing cycling with running and nervous of bringing everything down by buggering my knees and ankles but equally am being sensible.

I would also like to drop some weight and aiming for 16st as a goal. I have surprised myself by enjoying runnign using a mix of good music, flat routes and getting uber competative using nike+

Advice please!!!! Many thanks in advance

  • For where you're at, I don't think the two goals are so opposed. Building base, that is long miles at your aerobic zone, will improve your short distance times almost as much as speed work and with lower injury risk.

  • marathon training will almost defintiely cause you to lose weight. ok 1) get proper running shoes your feet will thank you 2) get a plan - a plan is roadmap to get you to the starting line healthy and to finish line by your goal time. it will tell you when to go hardl, when to go easy and recover. i like halhigdon.com but there a ton of plans out there

  • Got good shoes, I know I am A moderate over pronator so got them. I also have fairly good socks but hit blisters at anything over 7 to 8 miles!
