Newbie looking for advice/motivation

posted 12 months ago | Report

Hey everyone. Have been checking out dailymile and think it will be an awesome resource for me to get advice and keep me motivated. I'm a total newbie and have started running in the last month. My goal is to finish a 5k late July/early August. Definitely could use the great community around here to help in this journey!

  • Welcome to the funny farm Philip, 5k is a worthy goal, you could try using some of the few podcasts 0 to 5k training programs, they are free on ITunes and very good for beginners FR sent

  • Hey Phillip, Good for you for taking the plunge. I started about 13 months ago with the same goal. My first 5k was a blast, and I immediately signed up for the next one. My advice from one newbie to another - don't do too much too soon, and don't forget to stretch after your runs. Also, don't get down on yourself if (when) your schedule gets messed up and you can't run. In just one year I've had great months and lazy months. What really counts is that you are doing it at all. • Welcome to DM! Are you doing an official Couch to 5k program, or just doing your own? I'm a little more then half way thru C25k, and it's awesome! I haven't signed up for a 5k yet, but I will soon! FR sent

I am following Hal Higdon's Novice 5k plan. That is awesome you are doing great with the C25k plan. Looking forward to seeing your progress and completion in DM.

  • Hey Philip! Welcome to DM! I was a total newbie last year in March 2011. My first 5k was as a part of a sprint triathlon on July 9th, 2011. I loved it SO much that I continued training hard and completed my first marathon on March 4th, 2012! I never thought that I'd enjoy running, but it's amazing how much it has changed my life. You can check out my journey at runstrongrun.blogspot.com

I look forward to following your training!

  • I am returning to running after 11 years of laziness! I was a Marine once upon a time so I missed running a lot. But I started too fast and my legs started giving me problems so I found workouts to follow and now it's going great. I am on week 3 of an 8 week 10k plan and my legs feel great. I encourage you to get some kind of beginner workout so you don't do what I did!

  • Philip - I'm sure you'll do great. You have enough time for a 5k. Me, I don't care as much about the races as most. I totally skipped running a 5k and my first race was the Boulder Bolder 10k this spring (after running off and on for a couple years). I did another a week later and I'm now planning another 10k in August and a 1/2 Marathon in September.

  • Hey Philip - Great goal! This is a great community. Check out Runner's World Magazine for some tips and not to be too self-promoting, but I have a blog at www.you2canrun.com to help educate, motivate and inspire people with their running. It is for runner's like us!
